  • Jan 01, 2021

Good afternoon, my reader. In the spring, not only plants, but also their pests, wake up from hibernation. And then the gardener's task is to protect his garden from insects. One of the best ways is to use trapping belts. Let's figure out how they are used.

How the catching belt works

The work of the belt is based on the fact that a strip of rough cloth, paper, plastic or other materials creates a barrier through which it will be difficult for insects wintering in the soil or in fallen leaves to get over. This strip, which is 15 to 25 cm wide, is attached to the trunk at a height of about 25-30 cm above the ground. As a last resort, instead of ready-made belts, you can use a plastic bottle, which was cut along and put on the main barrel or stem.

The main thing is to cover up all the gaps between the belt and the bark. For putty, clay, plasticine are used, in extreme cases - garden var.

For all its primitiveness, the belt stops:

  • apple moth;
  • apple and pear caterpillars;
  • bukarka;
  • whitefly;
  • black garden ants carrying aphids.

Belt options

Dry belt

Its use is based on the fact that the surface is either slippery (and insects cannot cross it), or, on the contrary, is extremely rough and interferes with movement on it.

Funnel-shaped

It is made in the form of a regular or double "skirt", where one edge is adjacent to the trunk, and the other moves away from it at some distance. A double funnel is obtained by tying the belt in the middle with a tight braid of jute twine, bending the edges up and down. Insects that have got inside are regularly shaken out and destroyed. A double cone is needed so that pests that go to the soil for wintering are crammed into the upper "skirt" in the fall.

Sticky

In this case, a paste is also applied to an ordinary belt, to which the pests stick. In addition to the glue, an insecticide can be added to kill insects.

The sticky belt is regularly cleaned of adhered pests. If there are too many of them, the strip of material is simply changed, burning the used one.

So that insects useful for the garden (ladybugs, bees, etc.) do not come across the Velcro, experts it is recommended to paint it green: greens do not attract these insects - but leaf beetles are eager for it go.

How to attach a belt

The finished hunting belt is installed according to the manufacturer's instructions. Homemade is fixed like this:

  1. A dense fabric is wrapped in two turns along the stem.
  2. On top of it, a narrow strip of plastic film is attached - so that 5-7 cm remain to the edges of the fabric from above and below.
  3. The belt is tied with a garden twine, the gaps are covered.
  4. An adhesive base is applied in the form of a special sprayed glue. This step is optional, but needed to craft a sticky belt.

The finished belt is kept on the trunk until the end of summer, spraying a new layer of paste once a month. After that, the belt is removed and burned.

Where and how are glue trapping belts used

Belts with a layer of sticky glue applied to them are attached to the trunks from the moment the earth warms up and until the buds swell. It makes no sense to install them later: if there were pests, they are already on the tree.

The second time the belts are installed after harvesting and before the cold snap - to collect ticks, whiteflies, aphids and other pests heading for wintering.

The belts are easy and convenient to use, and if you regularly change the traps already filled with pests and spray a new layer of glue, they are also extremely effective.
