Feeding indoor plants with organic fertilizers: bread leaven

  • Jan 14, 2021

Good afternoon, my reader. Very often, gardeners and farmers give preference to chemical fertilizers and fertilizing, since the range of nutrients and minerals in them is higher than in organic ones. Nevertheless, having tried bread dressing from personal experience, you can once and for all abandon the store fertilizer.

The most common indoor plants in our region are ficus and geraniums. If you are the owner of these crops, then more than once you have come across the fact that the ficus drops its leaves closer to winter, and geranium does not bloom as luxuriantly as it happens in the spring and summer. After fertilization with bread sourdough, the condition of these flowers is noticeably improved. Ficus does not shed its leaves, on the contrary, it becomes more juicy and bright, geranium begins to bloom more abundantly and acquires additional inflorescences.

Let's figure out what is still useful for feeding based on bread sourdough and with what useful substances it enriches the soil.

Benefits of bread leaven

  • Each of us from childhood heard this phrase: "Bread is the head of everything." Indeed, bread is good for both people and plants, because it contains a huge amount of vitamins and minerals. One of the main advantages of bread is its high content of iron, the deficiency of which leads to a halt in the growth and development of plants.
  • The high phosphorus content helps to strengthen the root system of indoor crops, increases their resistance to various diseases, increases the period and volume of flowering.
  • The yeast, which is contained in large quantities in bread, kills fungus and mold, enriches the soil with nitrogen, which promotes the growth of flowers.
  • Organic fertilizers are absorbed faster by indoor crops, due to which the effect of the use of the starter culture can be clearly seen in a week or two after its introduction into the soil.

Both chemical fertilizers and organic fertilizers need to be applied correctly.

Step-by-step recipe for making bread sourdough

To prepare this top dressing, you can take any kind of bread or crackers. The sourdough recipe is quite simple and accessible to everyone:

  1. Fresh bread should be cut into thin slices.
  2. The bread should fill exactly half of the container you are using, fill the remaining space with warm water.
  3. The prepared mixture must be placed in a warm place, for example, near a battery.
  4. Let the mixture brew for about 5-7 days.
After the starter is ready, you will need to strain it. Try not to let any leftover bread get into the soil. Watering is carried out under the root system of the plant. The resulting mixture can be diluted with water in a 1: 1 ratio.

Such feeding is used not only for indoor plants, but also for horticultural crops. The results of this organic fertilization will be visible within a couple of weeks after application, your plants will noticeably “freshen” and easily endure the winter season.
