The story of one bold experiment of domestic engineers

A huge number of interesting cars were created in the Soviet Union. Some of them even turned out to be "too interesting", and therefore never went into mass production or were used in limited edition in individual industries or in very specific areas. A good tradition of combining seemingly incompatible was passed on from the Soviet past to Russian engineers. For example, in the early 2000s, a train on car wheels was born.

Diesel locomotives will be used on the railways for a long time. These machines are capable of pulling heavy loads with them, covering huge distances and, as it turned out, even overcome difficult terrain. The latter, in particular, is possible if the locomotive is put on automobile wheels. In the 1980s, in the Soviet Union at the MSTU im. Bauman launched an interesting experimental project.

And it turned out like this. | Photo: youtube.com.

Engineers tried to create a diesel locomotive on car wheels. The DM62-1727 railroad tractor with a thermal drive was taken as the basis for the project. The wheelbase for the future monster was borrowed from the Hurricane artillery mount. As a result, a diesel locomotive was born, which did not need rails. The designers named their creation with the affectionate name "Mashka".

The first working sample was assembled after the collapse of the Soviet Union in the 1990s by order of the Russian Ministry of Defense. Why the military could need such a machine at all remains unclear. Now the "land" train is in Bronnitsy. Since 2003, the car has been decommissioned and is no longer used as a tractor. A large number of details about "Mashka" are not known, however, given the power plant, it is safe to say that at one time this tractor was superior in strength to the overwhelming majority of those used in the Russian and Soviet army.
