For many years of work, I have had a chance to work with a lot. One day my partner in replacing pipes was an elderly locksmith, whose age was close to retirement. I want to note that his experience was felt in every movement - he did everything confidently, quickly, without being distracted by unnecessary details.
When it came to dismantling pipes and processing metal parts, he used a grinder in a rather strange way. The instrument was held so that the spray flew away from it.
After such manipulations, we were forced to turn the casing over and put the support handle in a different way. I confess that this moment annoyed me greatly, and not only me.
After a few days of work, we got into a conversation in the back room with our comrades. One of them said that when he dismantled a 1.5-inch water pipe, a 200 disc was caught in the grinder. When the instrument stopped abruptly, fragments of the disk flew in different directions. One of the pieces dug directly into the tarpaulin boot, miraculously not hitting the leg. My partner was just lucky because it could have ended much worse. Other fragments of the disc hit the protective casing.
Having discussed this case, we began to think why our "seasoned" locksmith, while cutting metal, holds the grinder so that the spray would fly from him. After all, all other workers do it differently. Then an experienced worker intervened in the conversation. He told us a simple truth that none of us had ever known before. I also want to bring you up to date.
What did an experienced locksmith advise us?
- First, when cutting metal and any other parts, you must use a protective cover. Secondly, it is imperative to carry out work with glasses. The best option is a full-length mask, but for lack of a better, glasses will do.
- During work, the tool must be directed so that splashes escaping from under the disc do not fall on clothing. In rare cases, fragments of the disk fly away in the direction of the flight of the spray. It is possible that they will fall on open parts of the body. If you cut from yourself, the risk of getting such an injury is reduced. If you hold the grinder towards you, make sure that your whole body is not on the processing line.
Useful Tips for Non-Professionals
To work with a grinder, it is recommended to wear a tight robe. You need to hold the tool in your hands firmly and confidently so that in case of something it does not fly out. It is necessary to provide for the risk of stress in the metal product during its cutting. In the presence of metal tension, it is better to use a gas cutter.
If you are just starting to master the grinder, then it is better to cut parts holding the tool "towards you". This way you can feel how the device will behave. After gaining experience, start working by directing the spray away from you.
