How to connect two phases to the meter? What counter do you need?

  • Mar 03, 2021

This is exactly what the title of the question from the reader Andrey sounded like.

I continue to publish the questions that readers asked me. For new dear readers who came to my channel for the first time, I would like to inform you that this is already 28 such publication. You can familiarize yourself with some other questions and answers to them by clicking on the links at the bottom of this article.

The text of the question itself was as follows:

Private house. One phase of 5 kW comes. It is necessary to make 2 phases (no wires are designed for 3 phases), 15 kW. How to connect two phases to the meter? What counter do you need?

I gave the following answer to this question:

In no way, electricity meters are divided into single-phase and three-phase by the number of phases. Therefore, if you are going to increase the number of phases coming to the electricity metering unit, you will have to provide a three-phase power supply scheme. Today, almost nowhere is a consumer connection for two phase conductors used, with the exception of outdated transformers designed for 127/220 V.

Also, the question of power is of interest, how do you mean to increase from 5 kW to 15 kW, only due to the fact that you will conduct another phase conductor? In this case, classical mathematics does not work. To begin with, you must agree on the size of the allocated power limit or its increase with the power supply organization. Theoretically, if they have such an opportunity, then you submit an appropriate application in the established form, pay the invoice, and you change the type of connection or simply set a new power limit with an automatic input switch.

In this case, the organization of the internal distribution network falls on the shoulders of the electricity consumer. And the line to the electricity meter, its installation and connection is the work of the company's specialists.
