Ground clearance and ground clearance: what is the difference and how dealers cheat drivers

Reading about cars on the Internet, every now and then you come across concepts such as ground clearance and ground clearance. Many, especially less experienced motorists, mistakenly believe that the two terms are synonymous. Moreover, there are not very honest car sellers who are happy with this delusion of naive consumers. It's time to find out and understand what is the difference between these concepts, and why it is so important to understand this when choosing a new car.

In fact, there is nothing complicated in this matter. It is enough to understand the current concepts. Banal knowledge of the terms will allow you to avoid mistakes when buying a car and subsequently not to tear on your head hair from the fact that something broke at the most inopportune moment when trying to climb the "extreme" surface. So what is ground clearance and what is ground clearance?

Vehicle clearance Is a technical characteristic that indicates the minimum distance from the car body to the surface on which it stands. Ground clearance should be measured on a flat surface near an empty, unloaded vehicle (no fuel, passengers, driver and luggage). Accordingly, already when refueling and getting the driver behind the wheel, the vehicle's factory clearance will differ from the actual one. This should be taken into account when analyzing the figures given in the characteristics of the machine.

Vehicle ground clearance Is a technical characteristic that indicates the distance from the surface on which the machine stands to the lowest point of its structure. In SUVs, the ground clearance is most often the distance from the bridges to the ground, and in cars, from the ground to the rear beam. For example, the clearance of the UAZ-469 SUV is 300 mm, while its ground clearance is 210 mm. Another example, the clearance of a passenger car LADA Vesta Cross is 203 mm, and the ground clearance is already 180 mm.

All this should be known, understood and taken into account when choosing a car. High ground clearance is for the most part only critical for off-road vehicles, which, due to the duty of the maintenance service, must regularly drive over bumps and climb hills. For city cars, the ground clearance is almost not important, here the ground clearance is much more important.
