In Yemen, among the mountains, you can find one of the most striking sights of the region - the Shekhara arch bridge. Despite the shabby appearance, this engineering structure is still very reliable and continues to fulfill its direct function - it provides a ferry of pedestrian flow between two rocks. It is hard to believe that this bridge is more than one century old.

The Shekhar pedestrian arch bridge was created in Yemen (southern part of the Arabian Peninsula) in the 17th century. Today, an interesting engineering structure hangs at an altitude of 2,160 meters above sea level, connecting paths on two rocks, separated by a huge abyss. The width of the gorge, through which Shekhar was thrown, is 20 meters. The width of the bridge itself is 3 meters. The bridge designer was a well-known Arab engineer named Salah al-Yaman.

An interesting feature of Shekhara is that the bridge was created almost from scrap materials. Almost everything that was involved in one way or another for the construction was collected in the vicinity of the gorge. It is also worth noting that the bridge, which has been hanging over the gorge for over 300 years, is actually gradually collapsing. Once upon a time, Shekhara had several more arches, which provided additional rigidity and reliability of the structure. However, they collapsed at the end of the 18th century. Until now, in the gorge, at the very base of the main arch, you can see the remains of a once single structure.

The bridge is called over the settlement - a small village that lies in the mountains very close to it. It is also interesting that the design was able to survive the civil war that broke out in the country in the 1960s. The village of Shekhara itself was subjected to massive shelling and bombing due to the fact that the headquarters of one of the conflicting parties was located there. Surprisingly, the centuries-old building was able to withstand all these dramatic events.
