Rules to follow
First of all, it is required to select healthy and high-quality planting material. For sowing, take onion sets. It doesn't matter what size it will be. Even if the onion is small enough, a medium-sized head will grow out of it. More onions will grow from 1 kg of a set than from larger onions. So the smaller the set, the more profitable it is to buy it for growing.
It is also important to prepare the planting material before planting in the soil. To give a push to the seed to grow, you need to fill it with warm enough water for half an hour. After that, it is necessary to transfer the onions to cold water, and then they can be planted in the garden.
To activate the internal forces of the onions, it is necessary to process the seed with growth stimulants. You can use: "Humisol", "Epin", "Cyclone" or "Rostom-1". You can also use a complex mineral fertilizer for soaking. To disinfect the seed, you should put it in a pale pink solution of potassium permanganate.
It is necessary to choose and prepare the right bed for this plant. You should not plant onions in one place every year, because this reduces the yield of vegetables. The best predecessors are tomatoes, potatoes, cabbage and cucumbers, which gardeners feed with organic matter. It is not recommended to plant onions in the soil after carrots and garlic. In the same place, the seedlings can be cultivated after 3-5 years, during which time nutrients will be restored in the ground.
The soil in the bed should be lush and loose, with neutral acidity. It is better to dig up a garden plot in the fall and put compost or humus in the ground. To acidify the substrate, you need to add wood ash or lime to it, and you can also use dolomite flour.
Before planting, you need to wait until the soil has completely warmed up, so it is better to start planting a crop in the second decade of May. Small depressions are made in the soil, the interval between which should be at least 10 cm. The distance between the rows should also be about 10 cm. The top of the bulb can be cut off with scissors or a knife, so the feather will germinate faster.
After planting, the main concerns are proper watering, timely feeding and the fight against diseases and parasites.
You need to water the onions constantly, as the lack of moisture reduces the yield. But waterlogging also harms the plant, since such a vegetable after harvesting is poorly preserved and quickly begins to rot.
The first feeding should be done 14 days after planting. Dissolve 1 kg of manure or chicken droppings (700 g) in 10 liters of water. Then pour this solution over all the onions.
During the period when the onions begin to pour, phosphorus or potassium must be added to the ground. To do this, put superphosphate in water, as well as potassium salt in a proportion of 15 g / sq. m beds.
An interesting and effective way to provide onion with nutrients is to use yeast. Dilute 100 g of compressed yeast in a 10 liter bucket. Top dressing is carried out after watering, and after one day you can moisten the ground again.
To destroy the onion fly, it is advisable to regularly dust the plants with wood ash: 100-200 g of ash / 1 sq. m beds.
Effectively periodically irrigate the bulbs with tincture of herbs growing in the summer cottage . To prepare the solution, you can use wormwood, mint or valerian.
