Good afternoon, my reader. Currants are most often grown for the sake of juicy fragrant berries, without thinking that the shrub perfectly complements the landscape design.

The desire of people to make the garden not only fruitful, but also beautiful is growing exponentially. Gardeners are aware of the importance of the visual component, they use both decorative elements and ordinary garden crops for this. Currant is a non-standard way to decorate the landscape design of your site, if you look at it from the other side.
In spring, decorative elements of the shrub are represented by minimalistic inflorescences, due to which the plant looks beautiful. The agrotechnically correct planting site and consideration of design requirements will allow currants to become the centerpiece of garden design.
Currant in the form of a green hedge
Live fencing of red or black currant is grown as a way to protect against wind currents. Golden currants, on the other hand, look more organic, being a decorative element or a low border.
For the density of the fence, it is assumed that the plants are planted in a checkerboard pattern, close to each other, in 2 rows. There are 3 shrubs per running meter of a living fence, and 5 shrubs for a two-row fence.
Planting a group of several shrubs
Group planting is used as a way to constrain or in the middle of a lot, which can be a great design element. It is important to ensure the smoothness of the planting boundaries with an odd number of shrubs.
Planting single shrubs (tapeworms)
The technique is used by designers when arranging parks, but gardeners use it when decorating their plots. Solitary shrubs should be lush and attractive throughout the flowering season. A plus will be a sufficient amount of open space, where the width of the clearing and the height of an adult plant are related as 3: 1.
Trellis planting of currants
The process of cultivating shrubs on a trellis is time consuming and laborious, but the result is worth it. Aesthetically correct planting will attract the attention of guests of the site, and will also allow the currants to receive a sufficient amount of light. This method reduces the number of shrub diseases, leads to enlargement and an increase in the sweetness of the fruit.
Currant as a small tree
A currant on a trunk not only looks visually attractive in the garden, but also gives a large number of fruits and berries. The creation of a tree is possible when growing a seedling with a root or grafting red currant on a golden one, but this method will take a lot of time and effort.
Stages of growing currant trees:
- The strongest vertical shoot of an annual currant seedling is used, the rest are cut at ground level. All buds are removed, except for the four that are closest to the stem height. The top is pinched.
- The shoot is tied to a support 1.4 m high in two places to reduce the risk of breakage from a gust of wind or from the weight of the fruit.
- The stem is protected from sunlight by means of a special film or tube made of opaque plastic. The procedure allows you to protect the plant from the formation of unnecessary shoots.
- In October-November of the next year, it is necessary to shorten the new shoots that have grown on the branches of the year of planting by half. Remove branches that visually spoil the appearance of the plant, as well as growing inward.
- Choose 4-6 beautiful and stable shoots that will become tree branches, and shorten the rest to 5 cm.
- In the following years, carry out additional pruning: shorten the shoots from last year to the middle, and the remaining branches to two to three centimeters.
Currants as an element of decor will not only visually decorate the garden plot, but also give a generous harvest of berries, you just have to make an effort.
