Stepping

Obtaining a rich harvest of tomatoes is impossible without pinching - a procedure that involves breaking off stepchildren. We are talking about extra shoots on tomato bushes.

Tomatoes growing in protected ground conditions should have no more than 2-3 shoots. Experienced gardeners recommend leaving the central and well-developed upper ones. Each lower shoot should be removed. The stems growing from below bloom and bear fruit much later than the upper ones.

A tall variety of vegetable culture is formed into 2 stems, and the second is supposed to grow from the shoot, under which the first brush is located. All remaining shoots will need to be removed from the leaf sinuses.

When growing hybrids and semi-determinant varieties of tomatoes, it is customary to remove shoots up to the third or fourth brush. Above it is supposed to remain the most developed and powerful shoot, which will need to be pinched to enhance growth processes.

The pinching procedure is performed in compliance with the following rules:

  • carry it out until the axillary shoots grow back (their length should not exceed 3-5 cm);
  • when removing the stepchildren, a small "stump" is left (the measure will prevent the appearance of new shoots);
  • every unnecessary stepson is not cut off, but broken off to prevent the defeat of the tomato bush by pathogenic viruses;
  • stepchildren of tomato bushes in the morning;
  • manipulation is performed at intervals of 1-2 times every 7 days.

Removing excess foliage

When growing tomatoes, the summer resident will need to pick off excess leaves on the bushes. We are talking about the lower tier of greenery. Contact of foliage with soil is extremely undesirable, it threatens to damage the culture with diseases. To avoid complications when growing tomatoes, the stem is exposed from below by 30 cm by breaking off the lower leaves.

The procedure is carried out only after the first brush has been formed. Within 1 week, more than 3 leaves should not be cut off, since this manipulation is traumatic for the plant. At least 1.5-2 dozen leaves are left on the bush. On the brush, the leaves are removed after the fruit is set.

Pruning inflorescences

The fruit is set 45-55 days after pollination has occurred. Experienced gardeners give a recommendation 40-50 days before the expected harvest time to pinch each growth point that is preserved on the shoot. You will also need to get rid of the inflorescences with buds and flowers. They are cut off or cut off.

Shaping

The edging procedure consists in pinching the tops of tomato bushes. It is produced 45 days before harvest.

During the manipulation, you will need to leave a few leaves (2-3 pcs.) Over the last brush with flowers.

Pinching growth points

To accelerate the setting and ripening of fruits on tomato bushes, it is required to regulate the number of fruit clusters. This is possible thanks to the shoot pinching procedure.

Removing unripe fruits

Experienced gardeners recommend removing slightly brown fruits from the bush that are at the stage of "blange" maturity. Such tomatoes, including large green specimens, tend to ripen at home.

Thanks to this technique, it is possible to achieve better nutrition of the remaining ovary, and therefore, to increase the yield of the crop by obtaining late fruits.
