As I could see from my own experience, the readiness of the land for planting depends on so many factors that it is simply impossible to predict the dates in advance. Significant differences can even be in different parts of the same garden. In such conditions, you need to check the soil for every second plant. After all, even in warm areas, cold and frozen areas are not rare.

For this purpose, some gardeners have already purchased digital thermometers, but I still prefer the proven folk method. It's not that I deny the effectiveness of thermometers, it's just that over the years this method has become more familiar and more convenient.

It is worth saying that some gardeners determine the readiness of the soil by birch buds, dandelion flowering and earthworms, but I think such methods are impractical. Indeed, a meter away from flowering dandelions may be frozen ground, which will be completely unsuitable for planting seedlings.

The folk method that I use

It seems to me that the easiest way to determine the readiness of the land is as follows. We dig a hole 10-15 cm deep at the site of future plantings. (the depth at which the roots will be located), remove the garden glove and place your hand there with the back to the ground. We hold for at least 15 seconds. The ground should be cool, but not icy. You should not feel numbness or severe discomfort. If the hand is comfortable enough, then the earth temperature is at least 10 degrees.

Thus, you can check at least every hole for planting. The main thing is to give your hand a rest for more than 1 minute after each check. Otherwise, the hand will be too cold and you will soon become confused.

How to accelerate the warming up of the earth?

If you feel that the ground has already thawed, but not yet warmed up enough, you can proceed as follows. In sunny weather, cover the area with transparent film and press firmly around the edges. The heated air will speed up the defrosting process several times.
