Petunia breeding methods
Unfortunately, this plant is difficult to propagate by seeds: the low germination of valuable varieties does not allow this. If you purchase the seeds of this culture, it is unlikely that you will be able to grow a large number of seedlings. It is not possible to collect planting material from terry petunias and hybrid varieties, this forces flower growers to purchase seedlings in specialized stores every season.
In order not to do this constantly, we recommend resorting to vegetative propagation. This technique is carried out in greenhouses during the production of seedlings for sale. But this process is simple, it can be implemented at home: petunia cuttings are able to take root quickly and without drugs that activate growth.
As a mother bush, from which the planting material will be collected, petunia of the most liked variety can act. You can also cut cuttings from self-grown seedlings or from a flower purchased at a store.
The procedure for preparing cuttings is as follows:
- at the end of August, you need to dig up the selected petunia bushes, without removing the earthen lump from the roots, and then plant them in containers for growing with a diameter of 15-17 cm;
- shoots need to be shortened in half, while leaving part of the foliage;
- containers with cuttings should be moved to a room with a temperature of + 10... + 12 ° C, it is important to protect the plants from sudden changes in temperature.
When shoots 6-7 cm long appear on the seedlings, formative pruning is carried out, and those branches that are cut during this event will be cuttings.
Grafting algorithm
For rooting, petunia shoots need loose and moist soil. A good substrate option is a mixture of peat chips and garden soil. And so that the soil retains moisture longer, small balls of perlite are added to it. In a container with a volume of 100-150 ml, the prepared soil is poured and moistened, after which they proceed to the preparation of the cuttings themselves:
- first you need to cut off the side shoots from the mother liquor;
- then remove the growth point and all the buds from the top;
- leaves from the lower part of the shoot must be removed, and the lower cut must be pollinated with a preparation that activates growth.
After that, the stalk is placed in a growing container so that half of the stem is in the soil, from which the leaves have been removed. Then the soil is re-moistened and the seedlings are covered with a film.
It is important to periodically ventilate the cuttings; for this, raise the shelter several times a day. In 15-20 days, the cuttings will take root, only after that you can remove the film from them.
