Fighting red bumps on currant leaves

  • Mar 03, 2021

Good afternoon, my reader. From fungal diseases and aphid infestation, currant foliage is covered on the outside with dark red bumpy spots (copperhead). Microorganisms and pests behave aggressively, instantly spreading through the bush, infecting other neighboring plants as well.

Ways to fight

Currant anthracnose is a very resistant pathogen, it overwinters easily in the soil under a bush, rainy weather promotes its reproduction. Gradually, the number of red-brown areas increases, they expand and join. Red currant tolerates anthracnose worse than others. If there are several spots, foliage is already starting to crumble.

If you do not take seriously the change in the color of the crown, the bush may soon die. The first step is to cut off all leaves with bulges and affected shoots, even young ones. Weeds are pulled out around and a circle equal to the diameter of the crown is loosened under the bush.

At the first stage of the lesion, the disease will be stopped by treatment with Fitosporin, Bordeaux mixture or vodka

Alcohol is not diluted with water, poured into a spray bottle and sprayed with foliage from all sides. This procedure is suitable for all types of currants, it is not dangerous for the berries even during flowering and ripening. After 15 days, the spraying is repeated again.

In serious cases, they resort to aggressive means. A suitable option is a solution of 5 liters of boiled water and 25 g of potassium chloride. After picking the berries, they are sprayed with argochemicals:

  • "Previkur";
  • Chistoflor;
  • "Agrolekar";
  • Fundazol;
  • "Kuproksat";
  • Ridomil.

It is difficult to remove gall aphids; it feeds only on young greens. In July, the foliage becomes tough and the pests move to other, more edible plants. Larval colonies are visible on the inside of the leaf. At the beginning of autumn, the females take wings and return to the currant again. Gallic aphid overwinters in buds, and lays eggs in the same place. In the spring, they all come out together with the first foliage and begin to spread through the bush, eat greens, buds and suck out the juice. In the absence of any control measures, the aphid will destroy the bush and move to another plant.

If these signs are noticeable already at the beginning of the season, then all affected and fallen leaves are removed and burned. Next, the bush and the ground under it are sprayed with copper sulfate or Bordeaux mixture. Other suitable drugs:

  • Fitoverm;
  • "Spark";
  • Tiovit-Jet;
  • Aktara;
  • "Karbofos".

Adherents of folk remedies use infusions from:

  • garlic and onion peels;
  • celandine;
  • marigolds;
  • tomato tops;
  • dandelions;
  • tobacco dust;
  • iodine.

A pinch of grated soap is added for adhesion.

The easiest way to fight is to pour boiling water over the currants in early spring. Boiling water of 70-80 ° C is poured into an iron watering can and the bushes are poured from all sides.

There is always the possibility of re-infection. In order not to have to resort to pruning diseased shoots and restoring weak bushes, attention is paid to the prevention of pests and fungi. Planting of pathogen-resistant currant varieties is recommended.
