Good afternoon, my reader. Many novice summer residents do not know how to properly store garlic so that it does not spoil. The quality and safety of a vegetable depends not only on proper cultivation, but also on timely harvesting.

Head collection period

Ripe vegetables must be picked on time. Garlic overripes very quickly, and the period from ripeness to this unnecessary state is very short, so novice gardeners can not decide on the harvest time. Sometimes a large number of dug heads fall apart into separate teeth. This indicates that they are overripe.

Garlic overexposed in the ground is not subject to long-term storage. These tines can be used as seed, but their germination will decrease. If only the garlic has been in waterlogged soil for a long time, then most likely these vegetables will rot: such a problem can occur after prolonged heavy rains or with frequent watering (it should be stopped about two to three weeks before digging).

The main external features of a ripe vegetable:

  • The dried part of the head above the roots.
  • Well-formed, dense heads underneath a whole, intact membrane.
  • The rind is purple-tinged.

Garlic can be spring and winter.

These species are planted at different times. They also differ in the timing of the harvest, depending on various factors, for example, the early maturity of the vegetable and the local climate. Winter garlic in temperate latitudes can be harvested from July 15 to early August. In warmer regions, the vegetable ripens earlier, and garlic feathers sprout in March. It is harvested in the last days of June. Spring garlic is dug up at the end of August. Harvest earlier during rainy periods to prevent vegetables from rotting in the soil.

These dates are not exact, but approximate. The bulbs themselves will indicate the specific harvest time, pay attention to the foliage and arrows. Spring garlic belongs to non-shooting varieties, therefore, their full ripeness is determined by a change in the state of the foliage: it turns yellow and withers. Non-gouging winter garlic has the same characteristics.

Usually gardeners break off the flower stalks that appear, but you will do the right thing if you leave two or four arrows in the garden. The cracked heads of the inflorescences give the signal for harvesting. If you want to collect seeds, wait until the air bulbs are fully ripe.

How to harvest vegetables

Garlic should be picked in good weather. It would not hurt if such days persist for some time after picking vegetables. The bulbs should be dug up with a pitchfork or shovel, cleaned of soil, dried in a garden bed for five to six days, foliage should not be removed. During the rainy season, the garlic should be dried under cover with good ventilation.

During prolonged rains, the culture is dug out 10-14 days earlier than the usual period. Work must be carried out after precipitation (at lunchtime or in the evening), giving the soil time to dry. Garlic should be peeled from the ground. Never rinse off the dirt with water, as this will impair the preservation of the vegetables.
