Self-insulation of the front door of a country house: the main stages of work and recommendations

  • Mar 15, 2021

Good afternoon, my reader. Most country houses are used only in the warm season, so their structures are mostly light, and there are no serious heating systems. But the temperature outside in summer can drop significantly, which means that the cold will penetrate into the country house. Its inhabitants will have to fight to keep it warm. Moreover, if the windows are static and their frames can be completely plugged with foam rubber or cotton wool, then sealed with paper, then the front door constantly opens and closes, it will not work to glue it. The only solution to the problem of cold air entering through the door is to insulate it, while choosing a wear-resistant material with good thermal insulation properties.

In order not to injure your hands, it is advisable to carry out most of the work in special cloth gloves. They begin by removing the door leaf from the hinges and laying it on the floor. To prevent surface damage from contact with the latter, wooden blocks are placed under the door. In this case, the lock and handles are removed from it.

Next, a heater is laid on the surface of the door, which is fixed, for example, with PVA glue. This will ensure that during the upholstery process it will not move or get lost in lumps. As soon as the glue is dry, you can move on to the next stage of work - door upholstery.

The upholstery material is laid out on the door leaf in such a way that it is evenly distributed over it. If its dimensions are larger than the dimensions of the door, you do not need to cut off excess material, it is better to tuck its edges.

They begin to upholster the door, as a rule, from its upper part. The material around the entire perimeter of the door leaf is nailed to it with ordinary nails, having previously placed rollers to prevent damage to the upholstery. In the central part of the door leaf, it is nailed down with decorative nails.

Having finished the upholstery on one side, the door is turned over and upholstered in the same way on the other.

Insulation of an iron door

Metal doors are usually insulated only from the inside. The handle with a lock can be left on during operation. They start it by marking those sections on which the sheathing mounting strips will be attached. After its installation, a heater is glued to the door leaf, the thickness of which must correspond to the mounting strips of the lathing. Next, the insulation is covered with some kind of finishing material. It can be lining, plastic panels, leatherette, OSB. The fastening of the selected material, depending on its type, is carried out using decorative nails or self-tapping screws.

Insulation of the door frame

Significant heat loss in the room occurs through the gaps between the wall material and the door frame. Basically, they are formed due to its illiterate installation, which sometimes does not come to light immediately, but only when it gets colder outside and cold air begins to siphon through the cracks. It is better not to wait for this and immediately after installing the box, carefully check the quality of work. The box should be rigidly fixed by means of special fasteners, and the slots along the entire perimeter should be evenly, without interruptions, filled with polyurethane foam.

Foaming is recommended with the door closed, since in the process of expanding the foam, its increased pressure on the door frame may occur, which can lead to deformation of the latter. After waiting for the foam to completely solidify, it is leveled, trimming the protruding edges with a sharp knife, the door frame is reinforced and putty around the perimeter. When the putty is completely dry, the resulting irregularities are eliminated by grouting with fine sandpaper, after which the surface is primed and, after the primer has dried, painted.

If the work on the insulation of the front door to the country house was performed correctly, in compliance with all recommendations, worry that warm air will leave the room through the door is no longer have to. However, you can also additionally insulate it with a special elastic band or foam tape, securing material around the perimeter of the door so that it covers the natural gap between the door leaf and the door box.
