  • Mar 15, 2021

Good afternoon, my reader. The correct application of fertilizers will help you enjoy sweet and aromatic strawberries throughout the season. To increase the amount of the crop, do not forget about the timely mulching and watering of the plantings. The need for additional nutrition can be easily satisfied by making 4 dressings per season, the main thing is to adhere to the fertilization schedule.

First feeding

As soon as the strawberry bushes release young leaves, the first addition of additional nutrition is carried out. To do this, dissolve 1 tsp in 10 liters of water. l. urea and make the resulting solution under the very roots of the plant. For 1 m² of plantings, no more than 10 liters of solution must be used.

Urea not only contributes to the active growth of green mass, but also helps to gain strength in bushes that have suffered from frost in winter.

Second feeding

As soon as the strawberry bushes release the first flowers, it is time for the second feeding. This time, 1 tbsp is dissolved in 10 liters of water. l. nitrophosphate. The resulting fertilizer is used to water the strawberry bushes. As in the previous case, 10 liters of mortar must be used per 1 m².

Third feeding

The next application of nutrients is carried out 7 days after the second. This time, the watering solution is prepared from several components:

  • 0.5 tsp l. copper sulfate;
  • 0.5 tsp l. boric acid;
  • 30 drops of iodine.

The resulting solution is watered not only the soil, but also the strawberry foliage. The substances contained in the solution are able not only to feed the plant, but also to provide it with protection from insects that can destroy plantings and future crops.

After making the third top dressing, the soil between the bushes is covered with wood ash.

Fourth feeding

After harvesting, strawberries need additional nutrition in order to restore the expended strength and be able to bear fruit for the next season.

For 10 liters of water, you need to take 2 tbsp. l. superphosphate and 1 glass of wood ash. Mix the ingredients thoroughly, water the beds abundantly with the resulting solution. In this case, it is not worth saving. It is recommended that you really water the plant with nutrient solution abundantly.

Useful Tips

  1. In the middle of summer, strawberries begin to lay buds for the next season. Stopping watering after harvest will negatively impact this important process. But it is also not worth pouring the soil too much, so as not to cause rotting of the roots. The recommended number of waterings is once a week.
  2. Watering should be done in the early morning or evening. This will help prevent burns on the strawberry leaves and prevent evaporation. One bush needs about 700 ml of water.
  3. Given the existing possibilities, it is worth giving preference to a drip irrigation system.
  4. Mulching helps to retain moisture in the soil, eliminate weeds and keep the berries clean. Before laying the mulch, the soil should be loosened and fertilized.
  5. As mulch for strawberry plantings, it is recommended to use needles, cardboard, straw, compost with peat, hay.
Timely care of strawberries, including fertilizing, watering and mulching, will prevent only to get a bountiful harvest, but also to increase the size of the plantation, thanks to actively growing bushes.
