Why is flax used for thread sealing?

By its structure, it has long, relatively strong fibers with which, in most cases, it is possible to seal the entire length of the thread. This material is readily available, cheap, perfectly fulfills its functions.

Can linen be used without additional protection in threads?

Flax should not be used without paste. If water gets into the thread and the flax is not protected by the paste, then there is a high probability of damage to the flax, it can start to rot, which will lead to its washing out, and eventually to leakage.

After sealing the thread with flax, a special paste is applied to it. If there is no special paste at hand, then a plumbing sealant is used, but this is done as a last resort. Since the composition of the sealant may contain acetic acid, which will not have a good effect on the thread.

Can paint be used to protect linen from deterioration?

It is impossible, such a connection becomes practically non-collapsible, because the paint in this case not only performs a protective function, but glues the parts together.

Where is flax and paste used?

I use flax and paste in metal threads that are heavily wedged. That is, there is a large gap between the thread and the coupling. I also use it on those fittings that have "notches". Flax, when reeled up due to them, will not slip off the threads at the moment of tightening. If during installation I use a black pipe, then 95% use linen with paste.

Where should linen not be used?

It is forbidden to use flax in plastic threads, because when moisture gets into flax, it begins to increase in volume. Which can lead to rupture of the plastic part. This in turn will lead to a flood. In addition, it is difficult to lay flax on the smooth thread of the plastic part so that it does not slip when tightening the counterpart.
