Why it is worth abandoning the floor insulation with mineral wool in favor of clay

Today, materials such as mineral wool and expanded polystyrene (polystyrene) are most often used to insulate the floor in a private house. At the same time, more and more people appear who prefer to insulate floors in houses according to the “precepts of their ancestors”, using only natural materials for this. First of all, clay. What arguments do lovers of “old times” and opponents of “synthetics” bring in its defense?

Floor insulation according to ancient technologies is done using not only bare clay. In fact, the floors are insulated with clay, richly mixed with sawdust. A floor made of such a composition will really be warm. Contrary to popular misconception, clay does not crack like concrete. At the same time, it is perhaps even the best natural insulation. Often, such a floor is also cheaper than one that is insulated using modern industrial materials.

There is no denying that mineral wool and Styrofoam do have their downsides. The main problem with polystyrene is its toxicity. If, God forbid, a fire occurs in the house, then the floor, insulated in this way, will become a source of extremely toxic fumes tending upwards. In everyday life, especially immediately after construction, the foam will remind you of its presence for a long time due to a very specific smell.

Mineral wool, despite its excellent thermal insulation properties, has many disadvantages. First, it can get mold. In this case, the insulation will have to be changed completely. Secondly, various pests often start in mineral wool, primarily mice, rats and ants. Thirdly, in case of flooding, such a heater will have to be completely changed, since cotton wool has a habit of absorbing water perfectly.

As a result, it turns out that the use of well-established materials can result in additional expenses. Clay and sawdust insulation is almost completely devoid of all of the above disadvantages. It will serve for more than one decade, and most importantly, such insulation does not need to be replaced over time.
