On which wire should the switch be located: on phase or zero

  • Mar 25, 2021

"Let there be light!" - this is one of the main phrases that come to mind when it comes to electrical engineering. People who do not have even the slightest knowledge in this area should not independently repair and install sockets or switches. At best, it will shock you slightly, at worst - and it's scary to talk!

Connecting copper and aluminum, poorly bonded contacts, choosing the wrong wire are the main mistakes that non-professionals make.

I decided to devote today's article to the installation of the switch. To do everything correctly and safely, you need to know which wire is needed for what. Unfortunately, some do not think about where zero is and where is the phase. They do everything "at random", and then disentangle the unpleasant consequences.

What should disconnect the switch

There are certain norms stating that the switch can only open the "phase" wire. Do you think manufacturers just write on the switches the number of Amperes that they are able to withstand during operation? Of course not. They do this so that you and I do not make gross mistakes!

When installing the switch, you need to break the phase wire. The fact is that it is the conductor through which electricity continuously "flows". You cannot start the current at zero!

Imagine you decide to repair a cartridge. The smartest thing you can do initially is to de-energize the apartment. This way you will be completely safe. However, it is possible to safely repair the cartridge without a complete de-energization, only if the switch opens the phase wire.

How it is forbidden to connect the switch

I hope you understood and understood that the switch breaks only the phase wire and nothing else. Otherwise, when you climb into the cartridge, you will receive a powerful current discharge.

"Why should I go into the cartridge?" - you ask. What if you started repairing the entire ceiling, or bought a new chandelier, or just decided to change the light bulb. Simple things done illiterately are life-threatening. Note that if the wire is poorly insulated, then even the chandelier body can shock you.

It turns out that in the event of a "breakdown" of the phase wire to the chandelier body, it will be energized. If you touch it, you will become a conductor of current. Nothing good about that! After all, lamps almost never have differential protection, since this is not said in the rules of the PUE-7.

If you break zero when installing the switch, then the LED lamps will flash after turning off the light. Is this a familiar problem? I hasten to "please" you: your switch breaks the wrong wire!

And at first glance, all this seems so simple, but in reality it turns out to be different. They broke zero instead of a phase and got a whole set of unpleasant consequences: LED flickering, short circuit, electric shock, etc.
