  • Mar 25, 2021

Good afternoon, my reader. Colds are not at all a reason to switch to canned food and forget about fresh herbs and vegetables. Do not deny yourself the pleasure of diversifying the taste of soups and salads - plant thyme and dill, spinach and rucola in the greenhouse. These and many other crops are quite capable of surviving even the harshest winter - it is only necessary to maintain a constant air temperature in the greenhouse. Let's take a look at some simple ways to keep warm in a glass shelter and protect your crops from frostbite and your wallet from wasting.

How to save on the work of heaters?

Happy owners of heated greenhouses know how much money they have to pay every year for the opportunity to serve fresh onions and parsley to the table. These numbers can be significantly reduced - you just need to take control of the heaters. It makes no sense to consume electricity around the clock, in addition, it is not at all necessary to douse every corner of the greenhouse with heat. Compliance with the recommendations described below will help to reduce electricity consumption without harming the coveted crop.

  • Using a thermometer. Fruit crops for the most part are ready to be content with little - until the air temperature drops below 10 ºC, they will continue to grow and develop. Place several thermometers in the greenhouse and check their readings regularly. Switch on the heaters only when the height of the mercury column reaches the "critical" mark.
  • Space zoning. By dividing the greenhouse into separate zones, you will not only increase the air temperature in each separate nook, but you will be able to track which particular beds need heating most. Heaters located next to such areas will have to be turned on for long periods of time, but it will be possible to save money at the work of their neighbors.
How do you isolate the landings from each other? Get help with stretch wrap, a bumpy material used to wrap fragile goods. Make long curtains from the canvas - fix them with electrical tape on the ceiling and along the walls of the greenhouse, and press them down with stones from below.
  • Using a thermostat. If you are not ready to check the thermometer readings every two hours, the help of this simple device will come in handy. Set the thermostat to a comfortable temperature for the plants and go about your business. When it gets cool in the greenhouse, it will turn on the heaters automatically.

How to replace a heated greenhouse

Heated Propagator

The propagator itself is a miniature greenhouse designed for breeding seedlings. Maintaining a propagator will cost you much less than heating a full-size greenhouse. Crops grown in winter by giants usually do not grow, so they do not need a lot of space.

Electric fan

It is not at all necessary to spend money on installing a complex heating system - it is enough to place a good electric fan inside the greenhouse. He will drive air currents throughout the shelter, evenly heating even the most secluded corners of it.

You can use either a wired device or a portable fan. The latter should be located at some distance from the seedlings, because its proximity can harm fragile shoots.

How to keep warm in an unheated greenhouse

  • Use geotextiles. The material perfectly retains heat - if you cover the seedlings every evening, they will easily survive even the coldest nights. In the morning, geotextiles must be cleaned so that the plants do not start to rot.
  • Insulate the greenhouse with stretch film. The material loved by gardeners perfectly transmits sunlight, but retains heat even better. You can use stretch film not only to divide the space - cover the walls of the greenhouse with this transparent canvas and enjoy the result.
Any scratches and dents stand out against the background of the pimpled surface, so in case of damage, it will not be difficult to find the problem area.
  • Heat the beds with hot water. In no case is it necessary to irrigate the soil with boiling water - the water must be poured into containers placed on the floor of the greenhouse. As the latter, you can use one and a half liter bottles.
In this way, the air temperature can be raised by about three hours.
  • Heat the greenhouse with candles. The products should be placed at a respectful distance from the seedlings so that the leaves of the latter do not dry out and wither.
With this method, the greenhouse can be warmed up on the eve of the night.
