Today I wanted to share with you a story I heard from an elderly architect. During his life he saw various structures and buildings.

Why do staircases in modern entrances always turn to the left? Explained by the old architect

I accidentally ran into him at the entrance. It was clearly difficult for my grandfather to climb the stairs, and I decided to help him. We got into a conversation, and grandfather complained that it was extremely inconvenient to hold onto the railing with his left hand while climbing the stairs.

- "But before everything was the other way around!" I was surprised if once the railing at the stairs was on the right when going up, and she herself turned to the right.

As it turned out, my grandfather used to work as an architect. He said that the idea of building stairs originated in the Middle Ages. Then people invented spiral staircases in the towers, as well as turning ones on the walls that protect the castle.

Any structures of those times had to comply with martial law. After all, castles and cities were constantly seized by someone, there were fierce wars for lands and territories.

All the stairs of those times turned to the right, respectively, the railings were also on the right. The enemy, climbing the stairs, always turned to the right.

At the same time, he was at a disadvantage and could beat the enemy from above with only his left hand. He couldn't even swing the right one well.
The same person who was standing on top could easily beat the attacker with his right hand. As a rule, the defenders of the palaces were armed with clubs and swords.

I continued to discuss this topic with my grandfather and asked why today everything is done exactly the opposite. Indeed, when climbing, it is much more convenient and easier to hold onto the railing with your right hand.

An elderly architect said that the time is peaceful today, and such an arrangement of flights of stairs allows residents of the entrances to quickly escape in case of fires. After all, it is easier to run down the stairs if you hold onto the railing with your right hand.

Old houses came to my mind, in which the stairs turned to the right. Apparently, the designers did not foresee the risk of fire, but they took care of the Viking attack.

Have you ever thought about the direction of the stairs in your entrance? Hardly, only if you are not far over 60 years old. Indeed, at this age, it becomes more and more difficult to overcome the flights of stairs, especially if you have to hold on to the railing with your left hand.
