Good afternoon, my reader. Root crops are often prone to cracking, including beets. Vegetables lose their presentation, and the taste is distorted. When the cracks do not have time to heal, water enters the cavity, and then the beets rot in the garden. This effect is given by the intensive reproduction of soil bacteria. If the harvested crop has not been attacked by microorganisms, then it will simply be worse stored. We will tell you the reasons for the cracking of the fruit and how to prevent it.

Excess feeding

Fertilizers are necessary for the growth and productivity of garden crops, but only in a certain amount. In case of an excess, there will be unpleasant consequences, especially for strong nitrogen dressings. If you add too much, the plant tissue will accelerate development and then quickly loosen up. It is best to fertilize beets at the very beginning of the growing season. Then reduce the make-up to a minimum. In the fall, it is recommended to scatter organic matter, such as compost, when digging the soil is coming. If you want to use fresh manure, then the next sowing of beets in this area should be postponed for 2-3 years.

Improper watering

The combination of weather conditions and plant care plays an important role in obtaining a quality crop. If a failure occurs in this system, then the development of various diseases, such as cracking, is possible. Beets are sensitive to the stark contrasts between summer drought and over-watering. The moisture content in the soil should be moderate. Lack of water leads to an increase not only in the rate of fruit formation, but also in their ripening time. At the same time, the cells on the surface will become coarse and thicken, which will cause the loss of elasticity, the desired texture and taste of vegetables. Over-watering stimulates growth and cracking.

How to reduce the chance of beet cracking

Experienced gardeners and summer residents know how to grow a high-quality root crop. Each has its own secret. It is more difficult for beginners in this regard, but for them there are general recommendations for avoiding defects in beets. The rules apply to all stages - from the choice of a variety to the peculiarities of caring for plants in the garden.

Important rules for preventing cracks in beets:

  1. Correct selection of the variety. We need specimens adapted to dry periods and cracking. For example, you can plant such beets as Cylindra, Bordeaux, Mona, Action F1, Pablo F1.
  2. Soil preparation. The soil should not be acidic, but it is not recommended to bring it to a more alkaline state in the spring, right before sowing work. Then the risk of scab will increase. Deoxidizing the soil is required in the fall. If it was not possible, then before sowing and during the growing season of the beets, you need to add pounded eggshells or wood ash.
  3. Top dressing. Before settling the beds, apply a complex fertilizer containing manganese and boron to the soil. Beets also need sodium, so it is recommended to spill the soil with ordinary saline several times a season. It is necessary to stop all fertilizing for the planted culture 2 months before harvesting.
  4. Watering and loosening. The flow of water and air must be established to the root system. Therefore, you need to loosen the beds. This will reduce the likelihood of soil tubules, through which moisture rises to the surface, and breaks down the crust on the top layer formed from drying out. Watering is necessary in the aisles, as needed. It is impossible to keep the soil dry for a long time.
  5. Mulching. Use sawdust, shredded grass or tree foliage. Mulch can be substituted for loosening if it is not possible to do it regularly. The protective layer also reduces the risk of drying out the soil.
  6. Timely cleaning. The best time is dry weather, before the heavy rains began. If you linger, then large fruits are threatened with cracks and rotting even in the ground. Early ripening varieties are harvested in September. The main rule for beets is to cleanse the beds before frost, since the plants do not tolerate them well.

Simple rules will help you get a great beet harvest at the end of the season. The fruits will form strong, there will be no defects, taste changes. It is enough to properly care for the plants, water and loosen on time, and also do not forget about feeding with mulching. Then the roots will be not only attractive in appearance, but also useful.
