Why do we need strange second "ears" on new hats with earflaps for the army?

The collapse of the Soviet Union hit the country's economy hard. Like a net caught in a cobblestone, the economy has dragged all other areas of life with it to the bottom. Including the Russian army. Nevertheless, in the past 10 years, a lot has been done in Russia to reform, re-equip and re-equip the armed forces. Including the form of clothing continues to develop and change. New sets of winter uniforms look very strange in some places. Especially - new hats with earflaps with mysterious little ears.

A hat with earflaps in Russia has a long history. It is difficult to say exactly when this headdress appeared. We can say with confidence that they knew him in the country even before the 1917 revolution. Officially, the first caps with earflaps came to the Russian army in 1931. However, the earflaps of that time were quite different from what we are used to seeing today. The familiar Finnish-style hats were adopted by the Red Army in 1940, strictly after The Soviet-Finnish war and gaining the richest (and extremely dramatic) experience in conducting military operations in conditions the most severe frosts.

Everyone who wore a hat with earflaps knows how simple and at the same time ingenious invention it is. In a real hard frost, there is no better headdress than a good old hat with earflaps. It is for this reason that it is used in the Russian army to this day. But nothing lasts forever under the moon, everything changes and improves over time. This also applies to the headdress in question. So on the earflaps of the new model there are some mysterious little "ears". What are they needed for?

The Internet is already literally littered with comic photos of soldiers and sergeants in new caps with earflaps, which protrude small "ears" with buttoned cheeks so as to look like bears. As you might guess, the funny design element was not actually made for beauty or fun. These are fur-lined lift valves that are used to open or close the vents in the hat. There is tissue perforation under them. However, the main function of these holes is not ventilation at all, as one might think at once, but the installation of a radio headset (headphones) on the headgear, to ensure communication with the unit commander.
