If all unnecessary branches are removed at once, then the tree is immersed in a long recovery period, while the risk of disease and even death increases. Distributing the pruning into the stage will reduce the stress trees inevitably receive.
Pruning is carried out in spring or autumn, more often at the beginning of the year, since at this favorable time there is still no sap flow. In frost, the wood should not be touched, otherwise it will crack. During spring formation, the injured areas have time to overgrow, and the tree goes into hibernation with a new crown. At the same time, it becomes clear on which branches the new crop will be tied.

First, the state of the apple tree is assessed. Rot on the trunk, hollows and deep cracks are signs of neglect, such trees are replaced with young ones.
Types of pruning.
- Gradual, takes 3 years. In the first season, the tops are removed from the top on the main trunk. The crown opens up, the apple tree recovers. The next year, diseased branches are cut down and those that thicken, intertwine and cross. At the last stage, the remaining branches are shortened to stimulate shoot formation.
- Half is a relatively new, harmless technique that many experienced gardeners use. The crown is formed in 2 years, but partially. Do not touch strong branches at a distance of 70 cm from each other along the perimeter of the crown. - Disposable. The method is ambiguous, incorrect work can lead to the death of the tree, but at the same time contributes to rejuvenation. The tree is shortened to a certain height, the top of the trunk is cut off in the center, and excess branches are removed. Formation is carried out exclusively in the spring, so that the apple tree has time to get stronger after severe trauma.
Pruning rules
First, prepare the tool, fasteners, disinfectants for slices, a ladder or stepladder.
The sequence of actions when trimming:
- Unnecessary large branches are identified and cut off.
- Dispose of the weak, sick and growing in the center of the crown.
- Part of the tops is cut out, no more than 10 pieces are left.
- Shorten the top of the trunk to 3.6 m. This will allow the crown to open for better illumination and airflow.
To determine the degree of thickening, they move several meters away from the tree. If there are extra branches, only 1/3 of them are removed, and the rest are dealt with next year.
