Japan quite rightly gives rise to an extraordinary delight in many people. Even an experienced traveler can surprise the island state, and for a variety of reasons. Few people know that Japan differs from the rest of the world and a number of things that are not customary to talk about too often. Namely - prisons. To begin with, they are considered one of the harshest in the world.

On the one hand, Japan is known throughout the world for a fairly low crime rate. However, at the same time, one cannot fail to recall that the country of the rising sun is famous for almost the most, if not cruel, then certainly strict procedures in its correctional institutions. It is all the more surprising that the local places of detention do not at all look like some kind of prisons of third world countries. They are very clean, complete order is maintained, and the guards (for the most part) do not allow themselves any excesses.

You don't need to survive in a Japanese prison. However, living here is extremely difficult due to the harsh rules for keeping prisoners. Most of the "harsh order" deals with various everyday trifles. The Japanese are betting on the fact that imprisonment should give the inmates maximum discomfort in their everyday life. The bottom line is that it is not possible to adapt to the prescribed regulations, in contrast to simply inhuman conditions.

For example, Japanese prisoners are forced to spend almost all their free time on uncomfortable tiny stools. The prisoners are forbidden to talk to each other and even look at each other. The same goes for the security staff of the establishment. You can sleep only on your back with your hands lying at the seams so that you can clearly see if there is anything hidden in them. During work, prisoners have the right to look only at their workplace.

Any violation of the rules or even some trifle will most likely lead to the fact that the person will be placed in a punishment cell. The Japanese punishment cell is also very different from similar places in prisons in other countries. It is clean and dry, however, once in it, a person must sit with a straight back from 8 am to 5 pm. If the convict breaks the stance, the guards will shock him with a stun gun.

Finally, in Japanese prisons, all contact with the outside world is reduced to an absolute minimum. Meetings with friends and relatives for prisoners are extremely rare. More often than not, any calls are out of the question. All this makes the stay here extremely difficult and burdensome, especially for foreigners.
