But it's not just the cloves that are beneficial in garlic. Many beneficial nutrients are also found in the arrows of the vegetable. By the middle of summer, garlic releases arrows, and many gardeners ask questions - should they be removed or left?

Let's figure it out.

When to delete

On this issue, the opinions of gardeners were divided. Some advise to remove them immediately after they appear. Others - after a small box with seeds has formed at the tip of the arrow. If you remove them early, then new arrows may appear in this place after a while.

If you trim after they begin to curl quickly, new ones will no longer appear. But during this time they will take from the culture a large amount of nutrients that are necessary for the development of a full-fledged head of garlic and the formation of cloves.

It is recommended to remove peduncles that have reached a length of 10-15 cm. They will not have time to grow again and take nutrients from the root system.

Cropping correctly

Under no circumstances should the arrows be pulled out or broken. This can damage the plant itself, and it even risks dying. The most gentle way to remove a peduncle is pruning.

Choose a dry, sunny day, since after pruning, the removal site should dry well, which will prevent the risk of infection with various fungal infections and other diseases. Take a utility knife or pruning shears. Be sure to clean the blades with an alcohol solution. Cut off the arrows carefully, leaving 1-2 cm from the edge. Such columns will interfere with the growth of new peduncles.

If you plan to leave the garlic for future planting, then the flower stalks should not be removed. Until the fall, they will curl well. Then they should be cut, open the capsules and remove the seed. Dry it well and put it in a cool, dark place for the winter. It is better to store garlic seeds in a canvas bag. In the spring, plant seeds on the prepared bed.

Remember that from the obtained heads, good garlic onions will be obtained only in the second season.

Second life of the shooter

With a persistent garlic odor, arrows are well suited for preventing bacterial diseases and pest control in the garden. Infusions from flower stalks have proven themselves well in the fight against carrot flies, thrips (garden flea), aphids and spider mites. The resulting solution does not harm the treated crops, as it is completely natural. Therefore, the processing of plants can be carried out both during flowering and during the fruiting period.

Traditional recipe

The arrows are crushed and poured with boiling water (8-10 liters). Let it brew for several days and spray the plantings in a diluted form or shed the soil well.

Garlic arrows contain a large amount of beneficial trace elements and vitamins, so they are used to prepare various dishes.

Here is one of them:

  • Rinse the arrows well, dry. Cut into columns and sauté in olive oil. If you want something spicy, you can add pepper (red and black) and any spices to your taste to the oil. An excellent appetizer!
