Good afternoon, my reader. Garlic is one of the most important crops in the garden. Winter garlic is grown by many summer residents, and there is nothing complicated about it. The main thing is to strictly follow the advice of professionals.

Preparatory work

At the first stage, the garlic is prepared for planting: the planting material is selected, the heads are disassembled into chives. The latter should not be damaged in any way. To protect against diseases during the day, they should be soaked in a weak solution of potassium permanganate or in a 1% solution of copper sulfate.

Garlic loves highly fertile soil - normal or slightly acidic. To enrich the soil at the end of summer, it is necessary to apply fertilizers. Based on one square meter, 10 kg of humus, wood ash in the amount of 2 glasses, 2 tablespoons of potassium sulfate and one superphosphate are required. Organic fertilizing is prohibited, otherwise the quality and keeping quality of the product will be reduced.

The beds should be placed on the sunny side from north to south. The width is made no more than a meter. The maximum height is 25 cm. The best precursors are cucumber, squash, grains, clover, and alfalfa. It is highly undesirable to plant garlic in the same place: at least 4 years should pass from the moment of the last planting in the selected area.

Landing

When the weather is cool, but without frost, you can start working. It is important that the teeth have time to take root even before the onset of stable cold weather. The planting period differs from region to region. In the middle lane, this is usually the first half of October.

The depth of the furrows is from 6 to 8 cm. The distance between plants in each row is 10-12 cm, and between rows is about 40 cm. The teeth are placed in the ground without pressing in an upright position with the sharp tip up. The grooves are covered with soil. Mulch is laid on top. It could be dry litter.

Features of care during the growing season

In the spring, the first shoots will appear, and at this moment the culture is fed with nitrogen fertilizers, for example, urea. For 1 sq. meter consume 12-20 g of substance. Be sure to loosen the aisles after applying top dressing. This procedure is carried out in the future, as well as weeds are removed.

Garlic is watered in summer. Cold water is not suitable for this purpose, as the risk of illness increases. For the entire period, watering is carried out 2-3 times. The use of mineral compositions is allowed, in particular, a phosphorus-potassium mixture. When 2-4 leaves are fully grown, take 2-3 matchboxes of fertilizer per square meter of the garden.

What winter garlic is sick with

The vegetable is susceptible to bacteriosis or penicillous rot of the bottom. Rot affects the heads even during storage, and during growth the plant becomes sick. This manifests itself in the form of yellowing of the tops of the leaves, followed by their complete withering away.

Prevention consists in proper storage and cleaning only at full maturity. When pruning, a long stem is left, the crop is air-dried before storing. It is impossible to keep the heads in a humid room and at high temperatures above 1-3 ° C.

Also, the culture is susceptible to rust, when the leaves are covered with spots of a characteristic reddish hue. At the first sign, the garlic is immediately treated with fungicides - "Oxyhom", "Ridomil", "Bravo" or "Ordana". The procedure must be repeated 2-3 times with an interval of 1-2 weeks.

Harvesting

Head maturity occurs from mid-July to early August. The arrows are removed long before they bloom. However, you will have to leave a couple of arrows as they indicate the maturity of the vegetable. The shells began to crack, therefore, it was time to make sure that the heads themselves were ready. It is unacceptable to overexpose garlic in the ground. Because of this, it is poorly stored.
