What plants is iodine useful for?

For the qualitative development of garden, ornamental, horticultural crops, a variety of useful microelements are needed. Iodine, for example, has a beneficial effect on growth and metabolic processes, and helps to normalize photosynthesis. This natural antiseptic successfully fights many diseases.

The following plants have a special need for iodine:

  • potatoes;
  • beet;
  • flower cultures;
  • cucumbers;
  • White cabbage;
  • dill;
  • Strawberry;
  • sunflower;
  • tomatoes;
  • eggplant;
  • parsley;
  • onion.
The use of solutions prepared on the basis of iodine in the preparation of seed material accelerates germination and strengthens the seedlings. In order to increase the immunity of seedlings to infections, it is recommended to use an antiseptic after the formation of the first leaves. It also has a positive effect on increasing fruiting.

How to determine iodine deficiency

It is important to regularly inspect cultivated plants. This will help you independently understand that the plants lack iodine. The main signs of such trouble:

  • decrease in the intensity of development and growth;
  • the appearance of rot on the ovaries;
  • poor fruiting;
  • the formation of small fruits with a decrease in the intensity of their color;
  • low concentration of starch;
  • weak stems, pale color of leaves;
  • susceptibility due to reduced immunity to the development of fungal infections, damage by a nematode and wireworm.

These signs will help to timely notice the need for assistance to plants. More often iodine is used as a preventive feeding.

  • To disinfect seeds, use 1 drop of iodine per liter container with water. The holding time is about 4 hours. Then, without washing, the grains are slightly dried and sown.
  • For the purpose of pre-planting potatoes, iodine is also used (2 ml / 10 l). The tubers laid out in one layer are sprayed. First, the procedure is performed on one side. When the peel dries, turn the planting material over and irrigate again. After such treatment, shoots appear faster. Thanks to strong shoots, lush shrubs are formed that can more easily resist changing climatic conditions.
  • To strengthen the seedlings, you need to dilute 1 drop of iodine in a 3-liter container with water. Gently watered young seedlings, avoiding the ingress of liquid on the leaves and stems, so as not to provoke burns.
  • To disinfect the soil, the beds are spilled before sowing with a solution prepared from 3 drops of iodine, carefully dissolved in 10 liters of settled water.
  • In order to prevent the possible development of fungal infections in the first shoots, 14 drops of iodine will be required for a 10-liter container with water. 3 L of whey is added with stirring. Such a preventive measure is especially important for plants that are not resistant to late blight. Practice three times processing, observing a 2-week interval.
  • A tool for which you need to pour 9 liters of settled water and 1 liter of milk into a bucket will help to cope with powdery mildew. With vigorous stirring, 1 ml of iodine is introduced. The affected plantings are irrigated every 2 weeks until the signs of the disease disappear. For ornamental shrubs, the amount of antiseptic in the solution is increased to 5 ml.
  • To organize the fight against rot, 10 ml of iodine will be required per 10 liters of settled water. Spraying with the composition is carried out in compliance with the 10-day interval of fruit and vegetable crops. Discontinued one month before the projected harvest.
  • For aphids, it is necessary to dilute 1 ml of iodine in 200 ml of warmed milk. With stirring, pour in 2 l of water.

There are many ways to use iodine in a summer cottage. It is important to correctly prepare the working solution, observing the recommended dosages.
