Garlic is a plant respected by gardeners. If you planted common garlic on your site in the fall, carefully and competently looked after it, then in July the plant will delight you with a bountiful harvest.

Differences between winter and spring garlic

It is not difficult to distinguish winter garlic from spring garlic. Its teeth are of a larger size, arranged in one row around the shaft. Their number ranges from 4 to 12 and depends on the variety. This garlic has a bright, pungent taste. The disadvantage is the short shelf life - up to a maximum of 4 months.

Spring garlic cloves are small, arranged in several rows. In one head, their number can reach 30 pieces. This variety of garlic has a milder taste, long shelf life: under the right conditions, it retains its excellent taste throughout the winter.

Winter crops should be planted in late autumn and harvested in mid-summer in July or early August. Spring garlic is planted in spring, harvested in autumn. These two types of garlic love different types of soil. They also differ in yield: in winter crops it has higher rates.

Harvesting Winter Garlic

The timing of the harvest time depends on the climatic conditions of the region, the variety of the cultivated crop. Harvesting usually begins in mid-July and ends before mid-August. Early-ripening varieties ripen after 80-95 days from the moment of emergence, and late-ripening varieties - after 100-110 days. One-toothed heads of winter garlic can ripen 20-25 days earlier than early ripening varieties. The last to ripen are plants grown from medium and large cloves.

If you think it's time to harvest, check the maturity of the crop. To do this, do not break off the arrows at a pair of plants. When the shells of the inflorescences begin to burst, you can safely dig out the garlic. Yellowed leaves also indicate that the crop is ripe. It is advisable to harvest the garlic within a week, since the product overexposed in the ground is poorly stored.

It is better to dig out winter garlic not in a hot time of the day in order to avoid overdrying the heads. When cutting off the stems, leave the necks about 10 cm long. The harvested garlic must be thoroughly dried before storage so that it does not rot later.

We keep the harvest

For winter storage, choose only intact, healthy vegetable heads. Fungal lesions can develop in cracks and dents. Store garlic in whole or in a peeled form, in cloves, in the refrigerator. Braided garlic is stored for a long time in cool, dark rooms with low humidity: sheds, basements. A good option is to store it in boxes, linen bags.

It is necessary to inspect the heads periodically. In case of signs of decay, dark bloom, discard them in a timely manner.

Planting winter garlic

In regions with a harsh climate, planting culture should begin in late August - early September. It is better to plant a vegetable to a depth of 10-20 cm to allow it to take root. In areas with favorable weather conditions, crops should be planted closer to winter - in the second half of October, laying the planting material to a depth of about 6-8 cm.

Garlic for planting must be chosen unpretentious in cultivation, adapted to the conditions of the region. Do not choose new-fangled foreign varieties - they may not take root on our soils or be thermophilic and not adapted to the weather of middle latitudes.

Whole large cloves are chosen for planting. Previously, in order to avoid pathogens and fungi, it is recommended to soak them for 30 minutes in a weak solution of potassium permanganate.

A vegetable crop should be planted in a garden bed with fertile soils and sufficient access to sunlight. The soil on which cucumbers or tomatoes previously grew is perfect: it is considered enriched with organic fertilizers.

A few weeks before planting, it is recommended to enrich the soil with fertilizers. After that, you need to dig up the soil to a depth of about 20-40 cm and let it settle and rest.

Follow the recommendations and advice given in the article, and in July you will surely enjoy a rich harvest of winter garlic, known for its benefits and unique taste and aroma.
