Tying garlic leaves: how is it useful?

  • Apr 20, 2021

Good afternoon, my reader. Garlic as a vegetable crop is practical and easy to care for. However, sometimes the leaves of winter or spring garlic can be tied into a knot, and many experienced summer residents practice this. Few people know, but such measures have certain grounds.

What does the set of leaves affect?

The stage of formation of the garlic bulb occurs at the same time as the growth of the leaves. By the middle of summer, a process begins when nutrients gradually leak out of the outer the top of the plant into the bulb, while the leaves of the garlic age and die off not as actively as near the bow. When the leaves are at the set stage, this indicates a stressful state of the plant and drying of the bulb above the ground. In order for the bulb to form more quickly, the feather should be tied in a knot and harvested when the hour comes. In addition, knotted garlic heads grow larger and more durable.

Features of leaf tying

The knot is formed from the garlic leaves at the top of the plant. Too long leaves are tied not in one, but in two knots. Do not tie the leaves too tightly, otherwise the part of the plant above the ground will suffer. Some summer residents even prefer to weave a whole pigtail from the leaves, but this method takes up much more energy and resources.

To tie the garlic, it is advisable to wear gloves so as not to injure your hands with the tips of the leaves. For periodic renewal of planting material, it is advisable to grow winter garlic from air bulbs, called bulbs, every few years. For this purpose, you need to select several large pieces of garlic with shoots so that they are fully ripe, and such garlic does not need to be tied.

What else can you apply before harvesting garlic

Watering stops twenty days before harvesting vegetables from the beds. However, in hot, dry weather, it can be stopped even two weeks before harvesting. The layer of mulch, if any, will need to be removed to the side, or the soil should be carefully removed from the heads of garlic a few weeks before harvesting. As a result, the soil will become drier, the bulbs will receive more oxygen, the scales will harden, and in such conditions the crop will be better stored.

Thus, tying shoots is not necessary, but it is desirable and very beneficial for the garlic to be stronger, larger and more durable. Tied garlic is guaranteed to grow with strong, large heads and excellent palatability.
