What a strange pistol the hero Arnold Schwarzenegger had in Red Heat

Remember the old 1988 action movie with James Belushi and Arnold Schwarzenegger Red Heat? In it, the hero Arnie - Soviet policeman Ivan Danko fired from a very strange huge pistol. Soviet weapons, in the minds of Hollywood creators, evoked surprise and respect for their size, however, what kind of pistol was that?

The answer to the last part of the question should be obvious - Podbyrin's pistol (and this is what was called weapon of Ivan Danko) no one and nowhere else has seen, because such a pistol never existed in nature. The weapon was ordered by a props team specifically for the action movie at Tim Lafrance's gun shop in San Francisco. This is because the film's director Walter Hill wanted the Soviet policeman to wield a truly impressive pistol. At the same time, Hill really liked the German "Walther P 38", and therefore he wanted to arm Danko with something similar, only more and more solid!

At that time, Tim Lafarence's workshop had been working for Hollywood for several years, creating cinematic weapons. To create the Podbyrin pistol, the well-known American-Israeli Desert Eagle pistol in the Mark XIX 44 Magnum modification chambered for 9 mm was chosen as the basis. It was from him that it turned out to make the "9.2 mm Podbyrin pistol".

Much more interesting is that after the premiere of the film, the American Handgunner magazine published an article dedicated to the weapons from Red Heat. The gigantic "Podbyrin pistol" was also described there. The American magazine emphasized that such pistols are actively used by the Ministry of Internal Affairs and the KGB of the Soviet Union. Of course, the advertising article had nothing to do with reality. The material contained a huge amount of odious facts, such as the fact that a shot from Podbyrin pierces the frontal armor of the American M113 armored personnel carrier. It was also written there that the pistol uses a heavy-duty 9.2 mm cartridge, created on the basis of a cartridge case chambered for 14.5x114 mm.
