Killer whale for cod: what makes the new Russian fishing trawler Kapitan Sokolov unique

No amount of life's ups and downs can stop technological progress. That is why it is absolutely expected that even in such a difficult period for mankind, the novelties of science and technology continue to replenish the market. Thus, on the last day of summer, the newest Russian fishing trawler Captain Sokolov was launched in St. Petersburg. The lead ship of the new high-tech series of project 170701, which outwardly resembles killer whale or dolphin, is also a fish processing factory, multifunctional and at the same time environmentally friendly.

The construction of the head freezer trawler of project 170701, ordered by Rybprominvest, a member of the Murmansk NOREBO group of companies, was laid down on November 23, 2018. The total cost of the project is about 21 billion rubles, for which it was originally planned to build six vessels of the "freezer trawler-processor" type, and later, according to Novate.ru, the number of the series was increased to ten units, and the amount of investment in the project, respectively, increased to 38.4 billion rubles.

The implementation of the project was entrusted to the Severnaya Verf shipyard. And the company successfully copes with the task, presenting the first real results. Thus, the lead vessel of the 170701 series was launched on August 31, 2020. And it got its name in honor of the former head of the Murmansk sea fishing port and deputy head of the Federal Agency for Fishery, Vladimir Vitalievich Sokolov.

Kapitan Sokolov, as well as the rest of the planned trawlers of project 170701, is described as “the most modern” and “most innovative” among the domestic fishing vessels. First of all, this is manifested in the technical characteristics of the lead ship: length - 81.6 meters, width - 16 meters, displacement - 5500 tons. The main engine power is 6,200 kW, and the maximum speed of the vessel is 15 knots. In addition, the trawler-processor of project 170701 has ice class Ice2 and is capable of operating in ice up to half a meter thick.

However, the main innovative feature of the Kapitan Sokolov freezing processor-trawler is considered to be advanced technologies for catching and waste-free processing of fish. The corresponding production installed on the ship will not only allow storing fillets of different types in frozen condition, but right on board to make canned food and even fishmeal from it, and it is planned to catch cod and haddock.

In addition, the functionality of the fish processing factory, which is equipped with "Kapitan Sokolov", is combined with its environmental friendliness: the practice of throwing production waste into the open sea, although it is not officially prohibited, it has not been tacitly adopted anymore, so the technology of waste-free fish processing is not only innovative, but also allows you to keep up with time.

Initially, it was planned to transfer the first completed ship to the customer, which became Captain Sokolov, in September 2020, however the epidemiological situation prevented these plans, and, according to the latest reports, the trawler will be put into operation in a year, in the fall 2021st. The vessel will be used for fishing in the North Atlantic area.
