Container preparation

The material of the container is not so important for the culture; the dimensions of the container and the presence of a drainage system in it are more significant characteristics.

By choosing a plastic pot, you will simplify the process of rearranging, cleaning. Evaporation will occur only from the surface of the soil, however, the root system may suffer from a lack of oxygen, and the walls of the pot will be very hot. The clay pot will not overheat, but during frost it can crack, and during the heat the gardener will have to increase the frequency of watering.

Experienced gardeners do not recommend using metal containers: they conduct heat and cold, they must be protected from water.

Roses have a deep root system that develops quickly and therefore flowers need a deep container. Height is the most important parameter of a rose pot; when choosing, you should pay attention to it. It is necessary to take into account the characteristics of the variety when choosing the size of the container.

Variety selection

At this stage, it is important not to make a mistake and choose a variety that is suitable for container growing. Shrub roses and the largest varieties are not recommended to be grown outside of the open field. Even compact varieties of bush roses are not suitable for growing in containers.

The right choice would be non-capricious, disease-resistant miniature, ground cover and hybrid tea roses. The main difference between container growing and outdoor growing is the limited space. Otherwise, the conditions in the container are close to normal, which means that you should choose proven varieties that are resistant to sudden changes in temperature and drought.

Planting flowers

It is in the spring that roses should be planted in a container. Having chosen a spacious container, build a drainage system in it, it usually occupies 20% of the height. Place prepared soil on top of the drainage; a special mixture for roses is perfect.

When the third part of the pot is full, water the soil abundantly and place the seedling there with its roots straightened out. Then cover the seedling with the remaining soil so that the root collar is about 3 fingers deep. After that, the soil must be watered, mulched, and for the first time the seedling must be protected from direct sunlight.

Rules for the care of container roses

The most important thing in flower care is to ensure regular watering. To avoid drying out the topsoil, increase the amount of watering in dry and hot weather, otherwise the roses may die.

Don't forget about fertilizing. Roses need nitrogen in the spring and before flowering, in the summer, potassium humate is added every 2 weeks, and with the arrival of autumn, the plant is fed with phosphorus-potassium compounds.

Pruning roses does not differ from the usual procedure for flowers in the open field, spraying against diseases and pests is also standard. But in the case of a disease of one flower, it must be isolated from its neighbors and treated separately.

Once every 2-3 years, the flowers are transplanted into new containers, and the top layer of the soil is changed annually. In the process of transplanting, the condition of the roots is checked, and if necessary, the diseased parts of the underground system are removed.

Growing roses in a container does not require much experience and special care in the care, this process is quite simple. It can be a rehearsal for planting flowers outdoors.
