What is required to grow green onions in your window

To be able to feast on chives all year round, you can grow them on your own windowsill. To do this, you need to stock up on:

  • seed material;
  • a large bottle made of transparent plastic (capacity - 5-6 liters);
  • toilet paper;
  • water.

When growing onions on a feather using this method, land is not needed.

As a seed, you can safely use onions bought in a store. It is preferable to take for this purpose already sprouted turnips with small green arrows.

Ideally, the forcing bulb should be firm, healthy and medium in size.

The turnips selected for planting will need to be prepared for it. Carefully remove dry scales from each onion. You will also need to trim dry necks. Then immerse the peeled onions in warm water and leave in it for several hours. Soaking will help the onion feathers grow faster.

How to grow green onions in a plastic bottle

To get an onion planting on your windowsill, you will need to perform the following sequence of actions:

  1. Using scissors, cut the plastic container in half lengthwise. As a result, you will have 2 blanks. The height of the sides of the cut bottom part of the bottle should be about 15 cm.
  1. Make several vertical cuts along the edges of both blanks. This is necessary to make them easier to put together, thus obtaining a semblance of a closed greenhouse.
  2. Unroll more toilet paper from the roll. Pick it up.
  3. Fill the bottom of the bottom blank with torn paper. Moisten her. As a result, you should have an even layer of wet toilet paper on the bottom. Its thickness is at least 3 cm.
  4. Place onion turnips on the surface of the wet paper (the sprouted feathers on them should point up). This should be done immediately after soaking them in warm water. The bulbs should fit snugly together.
  5. With the cut-off top of the bottle, cover the bottom of the bottle, filled with wet toilet paper and planting material. As a result, you will have a closed greenhouse with onions growing in it.

Move the greenhouse to the south window. Keep your onion planting warm and getting enough sunlight.

It will need to be periodically opened and checked so that the layer of paper at the bottom does not dry out. It needs to be moistened from time to time by adding water to the bottle.

The virtues of this homemade onion forcing technique

This method of forcing onions onto a feather has many advantages. It is very easy to implement. Even a beginner in gardening can grow greens on the windowsill in this way.

The method allows you to get a harvest of green onions already 14 days after planting the turnips in the bottle. Onion feathers are juicy, tall and tasty. They do not lie down in a makeshift greenhouse.
