A hundred years ago or less, almost all men wore hats. Moreover, in civilized countries it was considered indecent to leave the house without this headdress. According to etiquette, this accessory had to be removed as a sign of greeting. But today everything has changed, and most of the male population has abandoned this habit.
The exact reason for this phenomenon, of course, is not indicated. But there are several main points that have influenced the situation as a whole. In connection with them, two key versions are put forward - the reasons that changed the attitude of men to hats.
1. The first reason
The most popular factor in this issue was the emergence of cars of a new format - closed and low, and the rest of the vehicles that replaced carriages with horses played a role. Covered cars, which began to appear everywhere, eliminated the need for constant wearing of hats. The fact is that in this type of transport, the headdress has become a clear hindrance.
In 1920, not many people in America had private cars. In general, about one percent of the entire population of the state could afford such a luxury. But closer to 1940, the number of people who had their own car at their disposal increased several dozen times. In European countries, about 50% of citizens already in 1970. had their own cars.
It cannot be said that hats in the form of hats had completely disappeared from everyday life by this time. They were bought and worn, but the demand for them became much less.
2. The second reason
There is another suggestion on this score. According to him, the Second World War indirectly played its role. For people who had to stay in the uniform of military personnel for several years, the hat in its classic design was a vivid reminder of those difficult times.
The men who fought in peacetime did not want to wear any headdresses at all. In the forties of the last century, there was even the Hat Research Foundation, which in 1947 conducted a survey. According to its results, 19% of men who abandoned hats altogether cited the main reason for their decision as reminding them of the difficult period of the war.
