Top optimal green plants for growing in winter at home:

  • Watercress. Suitable varieties: Dukat, Dansky and Vesti. It grows without soil in a layer of cotton wool, cardboard or hydrogel soaked in water. Sow tightly and, until sprouts form on the surface, cover with cling film, put in heat. Watering is very important, moisture for the salad is vital. Leaves that have reached a length of 10 cm are already suitable for eating.
  • Mustard leaf. The best varieties for winter: Mustang and Freckle. The cultivation method is the same as for watercress. Eat a 25 day rosette of leaves. It is either pulled out of the ground entirely, or, keeping the growth point, individual leaves are cut off.

  • Onion (forcing on the feather). Spassky, Soyuz, Timiryazevsky and other varieties are suitable for our purposes. Bulbs for cultivation should be small, firm, free from rot and mold. If the feather has not yet "hatched", cut off the top and dip the roots into cold water.
  • Parsley and celery. The following types of parsley are suitable for cultivation: Gloria, Astra, Beads. Celery varieties: Delicate, Zakhar, Samurai. These greens are grown by forcing. Plant roots are placed in water for several hours, then planted in the ground so that the soil does not fall on the root growth point. Parsley and celery love light, a dark windowsill will not work for them, and these greens should be watered once or twice a week.
  • Basil. Varieties: Dwarf, Marquis, Lemon. Most often cultivated by cuttings. You can even root twigs purchased on the market. The cuttings are placed in water, changing it every two days, until the roots appear. Planted in loose soil, drainage is required. It is advisable to extend the daylight hours for this culture with special lamps, regularly loosen and water with warm water. The harvest will be in about a month.
  • Beetroot or Swiss chard. The best varieties for winter cultivation: Emerald, Scarlet, Krasavitsa. The plant is sown in a mixture of soil, humus and coarse sand to a depth of 4 cm. Thinned regularly, watered and sprayed every three days.
  • Chives bow. Varieties: Velta, Chemal, Honey plant. Onion seeds are sown on the surface of loose, light earth. They are sprayed with water, then sprinkled with a centimeter of soil and sprayed again. Cover with cling film and put in a warm place. Every day they ventilate by lifting the film. The film is removed after germination, fertilized twice a month with complex mineral fertilizers. Cut the greens when the bushes grow, be sure to remove the flower ovary so that the greens are tender for a long time. Chives is a perennial, it can grow on a windowsill in a pot for a very long time.
  • Arugula. Varieties for growing on the windowsill: Poker, Euphoria, Rococo. A mixture of garden soil, sand and peat is poured into a large pot with a depth of at least 15 cm. Spray the soil, sprinkle seeds on it, cover them with a thin layer of soil mixture. Tara is placed in the shade, since direct sunlight, even in winter, can burn the plant. Young seedlings are not watered, but sprayed and fertilized every 10 days with mineral complex fertilizers. In a month, the first greens will be ready for use.
