Why rolling shutters are an important part of fire protection

The fire protection system in any organization is an important part of the infrastructure. The risk of fire even in a warehouse is quite high, but at a manufacturing enterprise it is much higher. This makes it necessary to take numerous fire protection measures, including against its spread. One of the easiest ways to limit the spread of fire and protect people is to install a fire gate.

Fireproof gates

The gates, of course, perform familiar functions for everyone: they separate the premises, restrict access to them if necessary, and prevent the wind from walking through the spacious technological areas. Their main purpose is different - to protect people from a possible fire and prevent its spread. For this, all fire-fighting industrial gates manufactured to exacting specifications. First of all, the gates are sheathed with sheet iron, which can successfully withstand fire for a long time, or they are made of special materials that are heat-resistant and not subject to combustion. To reduce smoke in other rooms, the gates are equipped with a seal, which increases the tightness. In this case, the gates are equipped with an electric drive so that access to the room can be closed automatically. The gate is also connected to the fire system.

Why rolling shutters are an important part of fire protection

Fireproof gates are available in several designs. Each of them has its own characteristics, therefore, the choice between them is made in accordance with the specific situation and technical capabilities. Of all their types, rolling gates are used more and more often.

Design

A distinctive feature of rolling shutters (roller shutters) is the design of the door leaf itself. It consists of individual lamellas - slats, movably connected to each other. Each lamella is a hollow sheet steel container with an average thickness of 0.5-0.7 millimeters. At the same time, the gates must provide a high degree of tightness in order to reduce the degree of smoke in rooms unaffected by fire. To do this, they are made on a fabric base that does not burn, has excellent heat-resistant qualities and allows you to slow down the spread of smoke.

The door leaf rises vertically upwards and is wound on a shaft located in the casing. This is the main advantage of rolling shutters - they do not require free space if they need to be opened, and in the folded position they do not interfere with anyone. Meanwhile, despite all the convenience of their use, the choice of fire gates will have to be given some time, paying attention to a number of nuances.

Degree of protection. The degree of protection determines the time that the door leaf will be able to resist the effects of fire. The higher the degree of protection, the more time employees will have to leave the premises. In most cases, this parameter plays a decisive role.

Dimensions (edit). Due to the specific design of the doors and the lifting mechanism, their width is limited. If the opening is too wide, you will have to find a gate of a different design. It will be impossible to lift a canvas of long slats upward.

Filler. As a filler, manufacturers can use virtually any material; there are no special requirements for this. Nevertheless, the mineral filler will allow not only to slightly increase the resistance of the door to fire, but also to protect it from the cold, if necessary. In some cases, when it comes to protecting technological premises or large gatherings of people, you can pick up a gate, the lamellas of which are filled with a special intumescent filler.

Frequency of use. If it is assumed that the gate must open frequently, then it is better to choose a different design. The ideal option is to install the gates as part of a fire protection system, when they are closed exclusively in an emergency by automatic equipment.

Fire rolling gates have a long service life, subject to periodic checks of their condition, as well as the prevention of all joints and mechanisms, including the electric drive.
