Fruit plants are grafted in order to increase fruiting, improve varietal qualities, strengthen the plant's immunity and its resistance to diseases and insect pests. For inoculation, a suitable time is chosen in accordance with the climatic conditions of a particular region, usually at the beginning of sap flow. The drill is a tool that gardeners have successfully used to plant trees.

The good thing about the drill is that it produces even and neat holes, thereby significantly reducing the risk of damage and decay.

Methods for grafting trees with an electric drill:

  1. It is necessary to prepare a site on the trunk where the scion will be planted in the future. Excess branches need to be cut off, and cut with a pitch. This is done to enhance the effect of the vaccine. At the selected place, dirt is removed from the bark, and it is also recommended to treat this place with a weak solution of potassium permanganate. The drill should coincide in diameter with the thickness of the scion, or rather, be 2-3 mm thinner. The tip of the scion is cleaned a few centimeters. The hole in the tree trunk should be several centimeters deep, corresponding to the length of the trimmed end of the scion, and at an angle of 75-90 degrees. A stalk with a cleaned end is carefully driven into the drilled hole, and then greased with garden pitch.

  2. The healing procedure is carried out in a slightly different way. The trunk is cut at the required height, a drill is selected according to the thickness of the scion, the end of the cutting is also trimmed by about 4 cm. With the help of processing with potassium permanganate, the saw cut of a tree is sterilized. Next, the number of holes is drilled, which corresponds to the number of cuttings, the cuttings are hammered in and the surface is smeared with pitch. In this way, the maximum survival rate of the cuttings is ensured, since they are located vertically and have a large contact area.

Important! The scion should contain at least 4-5 live buds. or a shoot with 1 bud. The shoot must be fixed in such a way that the bud looks up.

Advantages and Disadvantages of Using a Grafting Drill

Gardeners who have used this technique note that the survival rate of cuttings is 80%. This method is best suited for healing stumps and replacing branches.

But the effectiveness has been proven only in small farms, while the method is considered irrational for large-scale plantings:

  • since it is required to select a drill for the size of each cutting, work time is wasted;
  • it is necessary to use electricity and there is no way to stretch wires that get tangled in branches and grass;
  • a manual screwdriver can replace the electric drill, but in this case, the risk of burrs increases.
