It is safe to say that the truly best tank of the Second World War was created in the Soviet Union in 1943 at the Uralvagonzavod Design Bureau under the leadership of Alexander Alexandrovich Morozov. The new vehicle - Object 136 or simply T-44 - was supposed to go to the front and gradually replace the existing T-34 tank. Despite numerous seeming similarities with another famous Soviet tank T-34-85, T-44 in actually became the next generation vehicle and in fact had much in common with the T-54 tank produced by after the war.
The tank was qualitatively different from all T-34 models with a more advanced filling. This primarily concerned the engine, chassis and suspension. True, the T-44 had its drawbacks. Armor tests showed that the protection of the vehicle against shells of 75 and 88 mm caliber is insufficient. The latter even penetrated the armor of the 44th in the area of the tower at any distance. It was precisely this defect of the designers that did not allow the start of a truly mass production of these machines.
Although the excellent filling still instilled optimism in the command about the revision of the tank in the future. The T-44 was produced until 1947. A total of 1,823 such machines were made. Only in the Second World War the tank did not take part, although in the amount of 60 pieces it still managed to enter the troops in 1945. The only case of military use of the 44th was Operation Whirlwind to suppress the armed anti-communist uprising in Hungary. Subsequently, the 44th was delivered to the countries of the Warsaw Pact.

In addition, the most promising and most successful in terms of design, the tank of the Second World War became a movie hero. It was regularly used to make the vehicle “play” by both Soviet and German tanks. He appeared in the films "Officers", "They Fought for the Motherland", "Father of a Soldier", "Liberation" and some others. In addition, one should not think that the T-44 developments were useless. After the war, they were used, among other things, for the creation of the T-54.

Of course, from the point of view of combat effectiveness, the best tanks of World War II remain such vehicles as the Soviet T-34-85 and the American Sherman. Each of the machines has its own strengths and weaknesses, but within the framework of their armies, economies and the conditions in which they were used, they can be safely recognized as the best.
