Even modern ships in all their dimensions have strictly limited supplies of food and drinking water. Several centuries ago, the situation with provisions for the ship was even more difficult. It often happened that the officers and sailors on the ships were starving. At the same time, a modern person will have many questions on this score, and the main one: why didn't they just go fishing? Indeed, in the seas and oceans, literally countless numbers of it float. In fact, everything is not as simple as it seems.

In fact, there were several reasons for refusing fish. The first and most important thing was that sailors on voyages and raids simply did not have the opportunity to catch marine life in order to feed on a commercial scale. A significant proportion of edible fish move in schools. The vessels, which were not fishing, had neither the time nor the opportunity to chase them. Moreover, in the era of sailing armament, the movement of ships was strongly tied to the speed and direction of the wind.

The second important reason was that fishing in the "deep" sea at a great distance from the coast was not possible until the 20th century and the appearance of special nets. In the distant sea, there is fish and it still moves in large schools, however, the sea inhabitant walks at too great a depth for "primitive" fishing means.

The third reason was the specific storage and preparation of raw fish. Most often, it was simply not possible to store such fish for a long time on old ships, and even more so to cook it. The sailors still preferred to stock up on land, ready-to-eat meat and fish. Mostly fruits and vegetables were eaten raw. However, until the 19th century, hard cheese, biscuits, crackers, less often sauerkraut and corned beef were the basis of the sailors' diet. All of the above has a huge advantage - it takes up little space.

Last but not least, the reason is safety. Not all sea fish can be eaten. In the era of the great geographical discoveries, people were just beginning to master the "sea diet", and experimentally. Many people were poisoned at the same time, including death. Not wanting to risk their own crew, officers often forbade the sailors to fish.
