Flowers for a shaded area: what to plant where there is little sun?

  • Jun 02, 2021

If a significant portion of your plot is in permanent shade, it will be difficult to grow anything worthwhile on it. However, you should not despair: there are plants that feel great on shaded territories and in conditions of moderate or even low illumination feel great, grow and even bloom.

Annual flowers for a shaded area

These crops are planted every year, and in the fall, after going through the entire cycle to the end, they give seeds and dry up. However, there are few such crops among shade-tolerant and shade-loving plants: for the intensive life cycle of annuals, the sun is still required. Nevertheless, even here you can find cultures that are able to be content with rare hours of direct lighting, staying in shade and partial shade the rest of the time.

Here, first of all, you need to highlight the following plants:

  1. Winged tobacco. It tolerates shade well, although it blooms there less intensely than in sunny areas. In order for this plant to bloom better, there is a little trick: you need to remove dried peduncles in time - then the plant will not waste nutrients for the formation of seeds, but will begin to bloom again. And even without dead wood, the plant looks much neater and neater.
  2. Rudbeckia. This plant with long narrow leaves produces yellow flowers with a beautiful dark middle of the calyx. Rudbeckia is extremely unpretentious and can grow on almost any type of soil. Even in shaded areas, it still blooms. The only subtlety that a grower should pay attention to is watering: it should be moderate. Otherwise, the plant may die from root rot. In addition, if the soil is not warmed up by the direct rays of the sun, excess moisture leads to the growth of moss, the appearance of mold and other unpleasant consequences.
  3. Nasturtium. This crop with beautiful dark green leaves blooms with yellow and dark red flowers. The flowering period itself is long - from the first days of June to the first frosts. Unlike rudbeckia, it needs more abundant watering - although here, too, one must be careful not to allow waterlogging of the soil.
  1. Lobelia. It blooms with neat blue flowers. It is grown by the seedling method. The culture can be both annual and long-term. Since the flower is tropical in origin, it will only be possible to grow it where the weather is warm enough in summer. Lobelia is accustomed to shade, but still prefers illuminated areas or at least partial shade.

Decorative perennials for a shaded garden

Their advantage is that it is enough to plant them once, and then they will grow in one place for several years. However, you have to pay for everything: perennial plants do not bloom as long as annuals, besides, flowering usually ends in early spring, before the foliage appears on the crown.

For shaded areas, the following crops are primarily suitable:

  1. Aquilegia. It is resistant to frost and drying out of the soil: the structure of the plant is such that it accumulates water and nutrients in itself. The flower as a whole is resistant to almost all negative factors, including a lack of illumination. However, there is also a minus: you need to choose a place for planting it once and for all: aquilegia usually does not experience a transplant.
  2. Astilba. It blooms with inflorescences in the form of characteristic panicles of different shades. Loves moist soil and tolerates shade well. It is suitable for those places where groundwater is close.
  3. Brunner is a plant with light green beautiful leaves, which are surrounded by a darker strip at the edges. It blooms in small light blue flowers. The transplant is well tolerated: the main breeding method is dividing the bush. This should be done at the end of summer, closer to September.
  4. Volzhanka. It also blooms with panicle inflorescences. It needs frequent watering and fertile soil - before planting in the hole, it is imperative to pour a layer of compost or humus. To water less often, the root circle can be mulched with needles.
  5. Heicher. It has bright leaves from light green to purple hue, pink, orange and red colors are possible. Also resistant to shade, grown for a beautiful crown.
