"Voskhod": how one of the worst motorcycles in the USSR won national recognition

Nostalgia is always a longing not for some things or events from the past, but for oneself, only for the younger one. And it is nostalgia that is most capable of distorting a person's perception. However, memories of ten years ago are one thing, and recognition during one's lifetime is quite another. This is exactly the case with the Voskhod motorcycles, which some consider, to put it mildly, "unimportant." Nevertheless, many models of this brand were able to secure popular recognition for themselves without any nostalgia. What's the matter?

The Voskhod ZM motorcycle appeared on the Soviet market in 1983 and immediately won the hearts of compatriots, becoming, in fact, a living legend. Compared to previous models, the vehicle has received not many changes. They touched on most of the dashboard, fuel bank and exterior. Minor innovations were made in the technical part of the vehicle.

With a weight of 135 kg, the Voskhod ZM could carry a load of up to 160 km. The maximum acceleration speed was 105 km / h, which, on the one hand, is not too much by modern standards. However, for the Soviet roads of the 1980s, such a speed was literally prohibitive. The motorcycle consumed 4 liters of fuel per 100 kilometers. The Sunrise was set in motion by an old power unit with 15 horsepower. Installation volume - 173 cc. The model was produced until 1993.

What was the secret of a motorcycle with far from the most impressive characteristics, even by Soviet standards? After all, the cherished dream of most young people was still the Czech motorcycles "Chezeta" and "Java", in addition, there were much more respected among the people and impressive in their parameters "Jupiters" and "Planets"? In fact, Voskhod's real fame was due to its simplicity and affordability. Of course, the motorcycle was far from the dreams of young drivers, but it was inexpensive, and most importantly it could be repaired most often on their own together with the "neighbor-tractor driver Grisha" using a screwdriver and hammer.
