Varieties of hillers

Caring for potatoes includes a procedure such as hilling. Such a tool is designed so that it can loosen the soil, forming ridges from it. When carrying out such processing, you need to use more physical strength, but still in the smallest volume than with manual hilling.

This device has an original, but very simple design. It consists of two parts: draft and working. The manual hiller consists of pipes and a mechanism for loosening the soil. All parts must be connected by welding. During the movement, the top layer of the earth is cut off, and at the same time ridges are created from the soil.

When choosing a hiller, pay special attention to the fact that there are two types of tools:

  • disk;
  • plow.

Pros and cons of devices

These devices differ from each other in that the land is cultivated in different ways, but the result is the same - loosening and hilling. The disc structure forms the ridges using round knives, the plow structure - due to the side dumps.

The disc hiller has a U-shape. Round discs are firmly attached to the frame, but only they should rotate freely. In addition, the device is designed in such a way that the sharp knives can move apart, thereby creating a large or small distance between the two knives. The value should be set depending on the size of the bed.

The plow-shaped hiller works just as efficiently. The ploughshare cuts off the top of the soil. The earth falls on the side dumps and crumbles to the sides. This device does not slide apart. Its width is fixed at about 25-30 cm.

The main disadvantage of these devices is their adaptability to use on beds with the same height. In this regard, it is very difficult to properly huddle beds with a different parameter. And a hiller with many functions is very difficult to assemble. Regardless of the type of machine, there is a risk of injury due to careless use of the tool. When planning a garden plot, it is necessary to take into account the work with a manual device.

Making a homemade hiller

Such a unit can be made independently by the person who has experience in handling such devices. When choosing a hiller, you should take into account the peculiarity of the soil on which you will use it. To assemble the structure, you need to take:

  • full set of keys;
  • grinder;
  • drill;
  • welding machine.

You will also need iron sheets and steel pipes. Use nuts and bolts to secure.

First, two discs of about 440 mm in size should be cut out of the iron. They should be about 2mm thick. The edges must be sharpened at a 45 ° angle. A hub is installed in the very center.

Brackets are cut from steel pipes. Then all parts of the hiller are fastened using a welding procedure, and bolts are also used for this. To prevent the product from corroding, it must be painted. The disc hubs must be securely fastened.

Remove weeds from the area before starting work. Once the machine is set up, make a test furrow. This treatment should be performed on a cloudy day. If you open up the roots, then under the sun's rays they can get burned.
