It may seem to many that the leader of Cuba and the movie hero "Experienced" have ordinary felt boots on their feet, or at least boots with galoshes. But actually it is not. Mysterious boots were quite popular in the Soviet Union. Red commanders, builders, collective farm chairmen, policemen, lovers of fishing and hunting, as well as many other citizens sported them. What kind of shoes are they, as they are called, and why do we not see anything like this today?

Those who immediately thought that these were ordinary felt boots are right, but only partially. The shoes shown in the photographs are called burqas and are something in between boots, boots and felt boots. Burka differs from the latter primarily in the materials used for production, as well as in the production method itself. Unlike the usual felt boots, felt cloaks are not felted, but sewn. For their production, felt, white felt and natural fur are used, which is sewn in so as to be strictly from the inside.

According to a number of parameters, cloaks are much closer to boots than to felt boots. So, unlike the latter, they have a hard, most often rubber or leather sole. In addition, these shoes are always very tall. In some cases, it even reaches the knees. Sometimes a special tightening strap was attached to the shin of the burok for better fixation of the boots on the leg. In addition, some models received something like sew-on galoshes, false toes, which were made of leather and were supposed to protect the shoes from water.

In the Soviet Union, cloaks were not a rarity, but they were far from being met as often as felt boots. Mainly due to the fact that they were sewn to a much smaller quantity, which means they were somewhat more expensive. In the pre-war and earlier post-war period, village tailors sewed burqas. Among rural residents, burqas were first of all very popular among those who spent a lot of time on duty in deep snow: foresters, gamekeepers, hunters, foremen. Before and during the Second World War, burqas could often be seen on the commanders of the Red Army. However, since the late 1960s, sophisticated footwear began to gradually go out of fashion.

By the way, it is in the cloaks in the photograph that Fidel Castro is skiing during his visit to the USSR. The famous Soviet actor Yevgeny Morgunov loved these shoes, who appeared in boots on the set of at least two films: "Moonshiners" and "Operation Y". You can find and buy burqas today. True, more and more often they are sold precisely as a fashionable, and not a utilitarian wardrobe item, which they were in the USSR. However, this does not mean at all that this modern winter footwear has lost its applied qualities.
