The Russian language boasts a fairly large assortment of various names of public drinking establishments. Why did you have to invent so much? Apparently, there must be some difference between the listed "institutions", which implies the use of different names from each other. Let's try to understand this difficult issue.

A tavern, a tavern, a tavern, a tavern, a shinok and some others - all these are designations for one phenomenon. This is the name of the drinking establishments, the difference between which is, but it is not fundamental. In general, all these words are synonyms. And if you call a tavern a tavern, and a tavern a tavern, a tavern a tavern, and a tavern a tavern, then nothing terrible and criminal will happen. Such a variety of names of drinking establishments in Russian is dictated by several reasons at once.

The first reason is regional. The names appeared in different regions of the once single ancient Russian state inhabited by a Slavic community. So, for example, in the lands where Ukraine and Belarus are located today, they used the word "tavern" more often, but in the lands where Russia stands today they used the word "tavern" more often.

The second reason is temporary. All of these and many other names-synonyms of drinking establishments did not exist, and even more so were not used at the same time. For example, the word "tavern" came to Russia under Ivan the Terrible, but drinking establishments began to be called "tavern" only under Peter I. Interestingly, many of these names are borrowed from the German language. For example, the word "pub" most likely comes from the German "kabache" - a hut. And the word "tavern" comes from the German "traktieren" - to treat. But all this is not accurate and deserves a discussion.

Interesting fact: many associate the words tavern and tract. This is mistake. The word tract in the meaning of road appeared in the Russian language later than the word tavern. Back in the times of Peter the Great, it was customary to call major roads "highways".

The third reason is linguistic. We have already touched on this reason in the two described above, but it is worth emphasizing it again in order to indicate the importance of the latter. Many words in Russian (in fairness in any language) are borrowed. Words were changed not only by the peoples emerging from the ancient "Slavic unity", but also by the peoples-neighbors. For example, in Russia there are many words borrowed from German and Swedish. The reason for this is simple: constant military, trade, cultural and dynastic ties.

Ultimately, much in the use of one or another designation of a drinking establishment fell on local specifics. So, later they began to call taverns small establishments where you can only drink and eat. While a tavern or inn was simply called more serious and large "institutions", where, in addition to food and drink, you could stay overnight and receive some other services, for example, caring for horses.
