What is the difference between a gray, red, white and black sewer pipe? I explain in simple language

  • Jul 31, 2021

Have you ever noticed that not all sewer pipes are the same. They differ in color: they are gray, yellow, white and black. It turns out that pipes of each color are designed for a specific purpose.

In today's article, I will tell you in detail what are the advantages and disadvantages of sewer pipes of each color.

  • 1. Gray pipes are considered the most common because they are inexpensive and have good physical properties. They are made of polypropylene. It should be said here that almost all pressure pipes are made of this material. The main advantage of polypropylene is that it is resistant to high temperatures, up to 90 degrees.

Agree, we all sometimes sin by pouring boiling water down the drain. Such manipulations will not harm polypropylene pipes.

Also, gray pipes have good chemical resistance. Those. they will not be affected by acid and alkali entering the sewage system.

But such pipes also have a significant drawback: they do not tolerate severe frosts and do not have good strength. If pipes are to be laid outside the building, it is better to give preference to polyethylene and PVC.

  • 2. Polypropylene is also used for the production of white sewer pipes, so their properties are similar to gray pipes. The plus is that white is more pleasing to the human eye.

If the communications will not be hidden in the walls, then it is better to use white pipes. True, they are distinguished by a higher cost. You have to pay more for beauty!

  • 3. Black pipes are made from polyethylene. 20 - 25 years ago, these pipes were at the peak of their popularity, they were used for laying sewers.

Polyethylene, like polypropylene, withstands alkalis and acids, but cannot cope with high temperatures. If a liquid, hotter than 70 degrees, gets into the pipe, the polyethylene will soften, the pipe will sag. Therefore, in such a sewer, joints often leak.

I have heard several times from plumbers that black pipes "dry out" over the years, as their diameter changes. As a result, it becomes impossible to connect new pipes to them.

If black pipes are exposed to low temperatures, their strength characteristics will hardly change. Those. such a sewage system can be laid outside buildings without fear that it will freeze in frost.

  • 4. The base of the orange pipe is PVC plastic with good mechanical strength. As a rule, such pipes are several millimeters thicker than all others.

In living quarters, orange pipes are not used because they cannot withstand high temperatures. The maximum allowable value for them is 70 degrees.

But at subzero temperatures, the strength characteristics of red pipes do not change. Often they are mounted outside buildings or underground at the depth of soil freezing.

I hope that this information will be useful to you in your life!
