One of the weirdest four-wheel drive military vehicles was created in the last century in France by a company "Panhard", which, among other things, is one of the oldest engineering companies in the country and the world. Today we will talk about what exactly this tractor was capable of and why such a strange vehicle was needed by one of the great powers.
A strange looking combat vehicle was developed in France by Panhard engineers after World War II. It was created mainly during the First Indo-Chinese War of 1946-1954, when France began to lose its colonies in Asia, primarily Vietnam. The command of the ground forces wanted to get at its disposal a new modern armored vehicle with a powerful cannon. So by the end of the 1940s, the first Panhard EBR was created.

The abbreviation "Engin Blinde de Reconnaissance" in French means just "reconnaissance armored vehicle". Serial production of the EBR began in 1950. The vehicle was put into service in 1951. In total, not so many interesting armored cars were produced - the number hardly exceeded 1,200 units, which is almost a ridiculous figure for colonial France.
The Engin Blinde de Reconnaissance was powered by a 12-cylinder, air-cooled, flat-boxer engine with a capacity of 200 hp. The car had eight wheels and four-wheel drive. In this case, 4 wheels could be raised, thus switching from the mode for rough terrain to mode for the highway. The ground clearance was 320-420 mm. Vehicle dimensions - 5150x2440 mm with a gun and observation devices. The length of the wheelbase was 4320 mm.
The vehicle was driven by a crew of 4 people: a commander, a gunner and two mechanics. They were armed with armored vehicles with 75-mm SA 49 rifled cannons and three 7.5-mm machine guns. Ironically, the Panhard EBR never fought in Vietnam. But the machine was used in a number of future conflicts, including the War of Independence of Algeria, the War in Western Sahara, the Bizerte crisis and a number of others. The EBR has not been removed from service in France so far, although at the time of 2007 most of the armored cars produced were lost.
