Yellowing of the leaves in garlic is a fairly common problem. The reason may be in the attack of pests or weather conditions. Leaves usually turn yellow in spring or early June. It is important to understand what led to this.
The main causes of color change
Leaves may turn yellow if the planting was not carried out initially. The gardener could unsuccessfully choose the timing of planting, take the wrong soil under the plant. Also, the planting depth is often not respected.
Garlic should not be planted in the fall. He can rise before the first cold weather, but immediately freeze and die.
The deadlines must be adhered to. In the middle zone of the country, it is better to land no earlier than the middle numbers of October. Then the teeth will take root, but will not start growing.
You cannot remove yellow leaves from garlic that has already wintered.
To prevent the beds from freezing, it is imperative to cover the ground with compost or humus for the winter. If the procedure is not done, you can use drugs such as HB-101, Energen or Ecoel in the spring. The latter is intended for plants that have developed in a stressful situation.
To prevent the plant from turning yellow in the spring, it is better to mulch the beds in the fall.
Wrong choice of soil
Garlic doesn't like sour earths. On it, it turns out to be weak, and the leaves may initially be yellow.
A simple analysis can be done to assess acidity. To do this, pour a piece of land with vinegar. If the ground is neutral, there will be standard hiss and gas bubbles. If the soil is acidic, then the vinegar will be easily absorbed.
To remove acidity, you need to add dolomite, fluff lime, chalk or limestone when digging. The amount of lime depends on the acidity level of the soil. You can also add ash: dilute 200 g of the product in a bucket of water and irrigate the ground with a solution.
If you plant the garlic too deep, yellow leaves will appear. The depth should not be more than 7 cm.
In case of spring frosts, "Epin", "Zircon" and other biostimulants will help. They improve flowering, root growth and disease resistance. For the solution, you need to take 1 ml of the product per 10 liters of water. The agent is sprayed on the ground every 7 days until the green color of the feathers is restored.
Bad soil
Garlic needs fertile soil. When the leaves turn yellow, we can talk about a lack of nitrogen in the soil. For preventive purposes, compost or manure should be applied to the beds in the fall. If this is not done, then even with the grown garlic, you can use top dressing. They are recommended to be applied after the snow melts. You can also apply urea to the aisles.
An effective feeding composition consists of:
- 10 g of potassium sulfate;
- 10 g superphosphate;
- 7 g ammonium nitrate;
- 10 liters of water.
Feeding can be done twice a month.
Garlic is poured with a solution of ammonia to prevent diseases and pests. Use 1 large spoonful of ammonia per 5 liters of water.
Potassium fertilization is recommended to stimulate the growth of garlic and increase its resistance to disease. With a lack of potassium, yellow leaves often appear. The lack of a substance is compensated by the introduction of wood ash.
