At the very beginning of the 1990s, it turned out that the domestic APS could no longer fully satisfy the requests of the Ministry of Internal Affairs employees. The police, security structures and special forces desperately needed the development of a new effective pistol for use primarily in urban environments. The answer to this request was a whole series of various projects, including "Dart" and "Berdysh".
The end of the 20th century posed new challenges to the power structures of the new Russian state. The Stechkin automatic pistol, widely used at that time, could no longer satisfy the requests of the special forces and security structures, and therefore the domestic designers were tasked with developing a new gun. Work began at TsKIB SOO under the guidance of designers B. IN. Avraamov and I. I. Stechkin. They decided to take the extremely successful design of the APS as the basis for new projects. As a result, a whole galaxy of new specialized pistols was destined to appear, the best of which was recognized as the OTs-27 "Berdysh".
However, pistols OTs-23 "Dart" and OTs-33 "Pernach" appeared first. The first differed from the original in that it was adapted for a 5.45 mm pistol cartridge, while the original ASP used a 9x18 mm PM. The second pistol received a new and, in fact, a unique recoil damping system: during firing, the barrel of the weapon moved 5 mm back. An updated gas expansion joint was also installed. All this made it possible to increase the rate of fire by 100-150 rounds per minute to 850.
The OTs-27 pistol became the highest manifestation of engineering thought. The designers were able to present the first prototype of the weapon back in 1994. However, the weapon had to be modified several times, as a result of which the Berdysh entered service only in 2002. The pistol was once removed from the army competition, but the Ministry of Internal Affairs became interested in the new weapon.
The pistol is almost entirely made of steel and has almost no plastic parts with rare exceptions. "Berdysh" received a recoil damper already familiar to us from OTs-33. The weapon got a quick-detachable barrel and a double-action trigger. An important innovation was the appearance in the design of an indicator for the presence of a cartridge in the chamber. The pistol can be made for several calibers: various pistol 9x18 mm and pistol 7.62x25 mm TT. Depending on the type of ammunition, it uses box magazines for 15 or 18 ammunition, respectively.

The pistol has an increased stopping power. The muzzle velocity when using 9x18 mm PM cartridges is 320 m / s. The range of aimed fire from the "mechanics" is 50 meters. The combat-ready pistol weighs 0.93 kg. The dimensions of the weapon are 200x35x143 mm with a barrel length of 125 mm.
