The rear sight is an essential part of the mechanical sights of a firearm. In addition to numerous numbers, the purpose of which can be intuitively guessed with a high degree of success, one letter may also be present on it. The Kalashnikov assault rifle has a "P". The letter is located closest to the arrow. Nowadays, not everyone knows why it is so necessary and what it means.

The aiming bar, or simply targets, is an essential part of the mechanical sighting device of a firearm. In order to effectively use a mechanical sight, the shooter must be familiar with the basics of ballistics. The numbers printed on the rear sight are needed in order to adjust the effective range of fire if necessary. As you might guess, the higher the number is set, the further the sight “looks” and the more the canopy takes the weapon when firing. One unit equals approximately 100 meters of vertical lead.

Moreover, among the numbers on the rear of the Kalashnikov Assault Rifle there is also a mysterious letter "P". Setting the rear sight to this mark will mean that the weapon is firing at a "direct shot" distance. This is a shot in which the trajectory of the bullet does not rise above the height of a given target. In other words, the trajectory of the bullet will be located inside the affected area over the entire flight range corresponding to a specific sight. For example, in pistols, a straight shot is 1.7 meters - the average height of a person.

A direct shot is used when firing at ultra-close distances, as well as when firing at a target moving in a vertical plane. A shot at "P" is required to simplify and speed up aiming. At the same time, depending on the specific weapon and the caliber of the ammunition used, the characteristics of a direct shot may change. For example, for domestic machine guns under the caliber 7.62x39, the "P" value is 350 meters. But for the Kalashnikov assault rifle chambered for 5.45x39 mm, the value of a direct shot is already 440 meters.
